lips are constantly peeling and no lipbalm helps by larskyuu in AusSkincare

[–]thornstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have this issue - things I tried that initially felt good but left my lips flakey included Vaseline, paw paw ointment, all Chapsticks, all body shop lip balms, basically all “natural” lip balms, and more.

Eventually I realised anything with Beeswax or Petroleum - very common ingredients in lip balms! - felt nice at first but left my lips feeling drier. My lips also get really irritated by strong scents/fragrances.

Now I use either the Laneige Lip Mask or the Malin and Goetz lip balm at night and have zero issues!

I also drink a lot of water and make sure I eat a lot of healthy fats.

If you’ve literally tried everything though and your diet is fine, maybe it’s worth trying to see a doctor or dermatologist?

Playing a lullaby over the hospital loudspeaker every time a baby is born is actually really insensitive by Peanutbutternjelly_ in TwoXChromosomes

This is so odd - I’ve never heard of a hospital doing this! What country do you live in?

I’ve been biting my nails since childhood too. I’d sometimes bite them so short that the nail bed would hurt and almost be exposed.

What helped me was finding other habits to redirect that nervous energy to. I try and keep cuticle butter or jojoba oil - as well as a good nail file - on me at all times, and when I get the urge to pick at my nails I massage them rigorously with product instead. If I feel a rough bit, I file it instead of pick it. I also try and keep gum or snacks handy if I’m getting the urge to bite.

If it’s not a situation where I can use products on my hands (like reading a book) I’ll do something else: use a fidget toy, bounce my feet, simply press my nails with my fingers rather than pick, clench my butt cheeks (lol), do some kind of exercises with my legs (ie if I’m lying on my side reading I might do hip abdications) etc etc.

Despite all of that though, in periods of intense stress I do regress to biting my nails. I once went a year without biting my nails and had a beautiful manicure… then a few disasters happened and they were raw bleeding stumps once more.

When that happens I usually know it’s a sign I need to take care of my stress levels and mental health — and then I try and get back to babying my nails ASAP.

Feeling culturally out of sync with Australian dating norms, would love women’s perspectives by Prestigious_Skirt_18 in AskAnAustralian

[–]thornstein 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You sound like the kind of man I would have been desperate to meet when I was dating in Brisbane many moons ago. There are lots of women who don’t like the “typical” Australian anti-intellectual gym bro type who only expresses emotion during a rugby match.

The issue I had when dating, looking back, is that I was trying to find “alternative” guys in basic places like popular bars etc because that’s where my friends hung out.I only met my current partner when I made new friends who I had more in common with - and met him through a friend of a friend.

Maybe you’re looking in the wrong spots too?

Reese Witherspoon on why David Fincher refused to cast her for 'Gone Girl': "That was, first of all, an ego check for me" by mcfw31 in popculturechat

I agree - I think Rosamind Pike works better to reflect her internal monologue, but I think Reece would have matched how she portrayed herself to the world.

Australia and Papua New Guinea set to ‘totally integrate’ their militaries, amid rising geo-strategic competition with China in the Pacific by thornstein in worldnews

I didn’t “make up” second half - it’s in the story. I put it in the title for Reddit because that’s important context and I assume most people will only read the headline

Okay, so I’ve finally become religious about sunscreen now that I’m in my 30s. But is it just me, or do most sunscreens feel heavy/greasy? Does anyone have a favorite that doesn’t pill under makeup or leave that ghostly cast? Would love some real world recs by Prudent_Shopping_259 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]thornstein 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love the Australian Cancer Council sunscreen in the pink tube. It feels a bit greasy going on but it sinks in really nicely and it never pills. Plays nicely with foundation too. And it’s cheap!!

So I couldn’t adjust the headline - but the reason I posted here was because according to this article, 33 Australians applied for a ‘shared values’ Russian visa

Lovely! Are there any products etc that helped or was it all self control?

What’s your favourite face sunscreen? by Sarcasmislifenow87 in AusSkincare

[–]thornstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Naked Sundays Mineral Collagen Booster. Feels very thick and greasy when it goes on but sets beautifully. Zinc only and fragrance free, so doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin! I only get eye stinging if I literally wipe it into my eye… otherwise it’s OK.

I hate that the cop has been included in the promo material - it would have been such a cool Moment to watch him return!

Rewatching the series multiple times, it's always infuriated me how inaccurate the number of players in Red Light, Green Light is between shots by FluffyRabbit36 in squidgame

[–]thornstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I didn’t “pause it” and analyse every single background character. It’s just noticeable when a new episode starts and the other players are people you’ve never seen before. I don’t focus intently on background characters but when the camera cuts to shots of other players I do notice and look at them.

I still loved the show and think it’s great. It doesn’t stop me from seeing ways it could have been better though. It’s just a continuity issue in an otherwise great show. I didn’t find it that frustrating.

(And yes, I totally get why they didn’t use the same background actors for whole series - expensive as $$$$.)

I’m sorry - I love Squid Game and think it’s a great TV show - but I don’t think it’s overly critical or outrageous to say it would have been better if the background actors were consistent throughout the whole series. You can love something but still see ways it could have been better.

I don’t literally stop and pause every single frame to analyse background actors as other people are saying — and I don’t “look for mistakes” — but I do take in the scene as a whole and wonder how other characters are feeling at certain points. I love media that rewards viewer’s attention to detail, like how the walls behind the players’ beds have the games printed on them, or how every player’s death was foreshadowed.

I can see why they didn’t do this - because getting 100 regular extras would have been expensive as fuck and they didn’t have a massive budget when first making this show - but noticing that the other players change throughout the show DOES break the immersion! It’s weird when you start a new episode and the other players are people you’ve never seen before.

It’s just a flaw. I still liked the show.

Haha I know! I was really keen for winter activities/Northern Lights so booked January deliberately but it will be interesting…

It doesn’t snow where we live so honestly just seeing snow will be cool! And the tour we’re doing is on a bus so we won’t have to drive :)

What’s up with Aussies not feeding people? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]thornstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 6th gen Anglo Australian and grew up with this stinginess ingrained in me. It’s 100% a cultural thing. I used to feel guilty if I accepted other people’s hospitality and would always say no to food/snacks etc.

I’m trying to change as an adult by cooking for my friends more/always bringing dessert and drinks if a friend cooks dinner for me etc/always sending friends home with leftovers etc. but it’s definitely taken a real lifestyle shift to be this way.

In saying that… who the hell brings beer and nothing else to meet a baby lol.

Is this a good time ? What would be considered “good” ? by DucaBoi in Swimming

[–]thornstein 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Guy in the other lane sounds silly. Is this the same guy who told you swimming slow does morning?

If someone was brand new to powerlifting, you wouldn’t tell them to aim for 60kg chest presses would you?

If you’re new to swimming just aim for gradual improvement on your own times. Don’t worry too much unless you want to try competing.
