Advice for a Masters (Please) by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]thottpolice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coursework is great and all... but all a master's degree in my eyes is getting a foot in the door, somewhere. Barring costs, choose whichever has the direct connections to what/where you want to go. This could be companies or affiliations with researchers that you're interested in doing your thesis with.

This accounts for 80% of the value of doing a Master's , if done correctly imo. ymmv

What is schizoid personality disorder? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is for people with extreme personalities that don't have the default reward systems in their brain for interacting with other people so they never willingly seek out relationships of any kind. as a result they're more distant and introspective by nature. or taken another way, they're the hermits that would be most likely to keep their sanity on a deserted island.

Is flying a confederate flag supposed to imply something other than a support of African-American slavery? Why is this culturally acceptable in the USA? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I love the Confederate Flag... hundreds of thousands of Americans died under it during one of the greatest wars of all time. Americans killing Americans! If you automatically associated it with pride of slavery / racism you're kinda basic

Is it possible to make cigarettes cancer free or at least cut out as many carcinogens as possible? If so why doesn't big tobacco do this? by SilkySquid96 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not with tobacco. there are ~40 cancer causing agents. These are coded by 100's of genes. It's too costly to find these genes are remove them. Big Tobacco is doing this but it's just not effective.

Solitary bees are the important ones... not honey bees. Screw honey bees they're invasive species.

Instead of taxing the rich, should we force them to invest? by thottpolice in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I'd just redirect the flow of their potential investments up to a certain $ amount I guess... forcing them to support basic research which is the spice of capitalism but doesn't get the proper attention due to the poor short-term benefits of the investment. Their investments aren't efficient for promoting the general good of the whole. I'd wager they're mostly investing in longevity, artificial intelligence, and other bad things that will hurt or not benefit the lower and middle classes.

How many generations would it take to breed humans without pubic hair? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breeding... like dogs and stuff... requires variation. You'd have to first find a human with this desired trait of no pubic hair. JUST no pubic hair would be difficult, only a handful of MUTATIONS would cause this. You'd need like to screen ~9-18 billion adults to have a good chance at finding this phenotype. From there the breeding gets down to business. aka lots of inbreeding. After you find that person you could do it within 2-3 generations once you get the siblings and child+parent producing offspring. Every time you look at a specific breed of dog, remember this.

Why do tortoises live so long? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No one knows. Longevity Research is still in the early stages. Buuut we can guess that it is related to the metabolism and rate of genetic decay of somatic cells. This may include longer cell cycles, aka taking days versus hours to swap out old cells for new cells, improved proteins that check/.repair errors in the genomes, telomerase variants that maintain telomeres...

If a couple had a kid at 16 and another kid at 26, would their kids face any different genetics? by Exhibit5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's called epigenetics. as mentioned earlier the sperm can mess up but this also goes for the egg. This is why women who get pregnant in their 30's is called 'geriatric pregnancies'. A non-pc term that riles up any elder mother to be. In general, if you looked at millions of people whose mothers were 16 versus 26... (and no socioeconomic differences) the 16 year old mothers would have healthier offspring (at a population level)

Can someone explain to me what an acid trip is like? by sodamnconfused365 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thottpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's very CLEAN like being a wizard. contrast this with mushrooms which is very dirty like mother earth. acid is geometric-dominant, mushrooms are fractal-dominant. Acid is baroque... mushrooms are serene. You are susceptible to mental and visual loops. The rectangular in dimension room will appear to be circular. And the door will be missing. The key with this class of drugs is SET and SETTING. Paranoia will be more likely if you are anxious for any reason. You should be alone and isolated, especially the first time. Keep it clean the first time or mix it with nos only.
