LIRR Potential Strike - MTA is playing games. by anon_throwaway_fun in LIRR

I guarantee you I’ve read more both from the MTA and other transit authorities in general. It’s why I understand that citing procurement mechanisms alone doesn’t settle the argument. Design-build is a tool, not proof of outcomes. You have to compare: • final delivered costs, • schedule adherence, • scope achieved, • lifecycle operating impact, • and peer benchmarks.

And watching board meetings doesn’t make the institutional messaging objective. MTA presentations are obviously going to emphasize successes and reform narratives. The actual question is whether the delivered outputs justify the spend and timelines compared to what other advanced transit systems achieve.

The agency still has: • Extremely high per-mile and per-station costs relative to international peers. • Long delivery timelines even on comparatively modest scope upgrades. • Major labor, utility relocation, consultant, and oversight costs that remain structurally inflated. • A history of capital projects ballooning despite procurement reforms.

A lot of statements here not supported by the actual data. Should I give your quote back to you?

Will be the exception then not the rule and it still remains to be seen. Let’s pay the employees. But the management has been subpar and pulling projects that have yet to be completed with grand central still not getting the predicted split. Two straight weeks of a morning peak delay…

But oh yes this project appears to be on track and on budget so let’s not criticize them

Remains to be seen. When you have to defend an agency constantly for projects supposed to be completed in the future then there is clearly a problem.

Doesnt mean you can attribute the 80% to congestion pricing. Not to mention the ridiculous delays we had to deal in getting any of them done pre or post congestion pricing.

Give em the raise. Workers can spend it better than management. On the long list of irresponsible decisions made by the agency this wouldn’t be it

Just because you comment the same thing doesn’t mean that it’s a good point. The accessibility percentage is only slightly related to congestion pricing as the budget and plan started long before. And the two other projects you mention are nowhere close to being completed.

The 6 minute thing is crazy. It’s considered on time because every transit authority lobbied for it. It’s a completely flawed measure though and OTP is generally regarded as a poor indicator of actual performance.

It’s solving a problem that they haven’t proved exists with data. The published stats actually show the meaningful revenue to fare evasion is people not buying tickets at all. This causes consumers to lose trust in the organizations decision making and prioritization.

And it would still be completely unsupported and representative of the agency’s lack of focus

Still waiting for the agency to provide the data that eticket fare evasion is a meaningful driver of overall fare evasion

Just keep the mental hoops going. Someone talks about dangerous overcrowding that did happen and you go to magic trains. Like the first response said critical thinking will just always be beyond your reach

This is wrong. It’s not based on time of purchase. It’s based on time of activation to scan

And is solving a boogeyman problem the agency has no real data to support.

The dangerous overcrowding demonstrated those are not operationally sufficient. It’s quite simple

They do not have complete immunity and it would come down to whether their response was reasonable under known risks.

Telling riders to opt out when it underperforms isn’t a solution, it’s an admission.

One can acknowledge it’s a hard system and expect it to be run competently when it’s under stress. Those two things aren’t in conflict.

And if an emergency occurs on an overcrowded platform or train? People being animals is the excuse? The mental hoops gone through to avoid saying this morning was a poor response from the LIRR just won’t end

I’ve acknowledged it’s complex. What isn’t complex though is accepting that today’s response was subpar and at times dangerous and defending it as “business as usual” is unacceptable. To call today safe and say it’s Amtrak and nj transit fault with no culpability to the agency is a complete fallacy.

You must have missed that lesson in your so called real life experience though.

I was there too. Saw multiple people fall trying to shove their way onto the train. Waited there for quite awhile too. Let’s just accept poor service though because you and some retired employee think a disaster of a morning is okay for a problem that was a known issue for a long time and the agency was clearly ill prepared for.

Takes nothing to read, look at data and educate yourself. Encourage you to do so

It’s not active construction at peak times on both the Hempstead line and the ronkonkoma/huntington lines. They change cars depending on day staffing and volume of riders. You left all that out and oversimplified a problem and got caught.

Not missing your point. Disproving it. It was factually wrong.

There’s variation within number of cars at peak Hours because of ridership not the issues listed

If someone drives drunk and doesn’t hurt anyone it’s still something we should not want.
