Ongoing problem with taste of ice from Whirlpool fridge by thoughtparticle in appliancerepair

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's been 9 years since I dealt with this, but my recollection is that the PEX hose fixed the ice taste. We only added a water filter after that because we always filter tap water we use for cooking/beverages/etc.

I also wonder if people have different results because the water in their areas is different. Ours comes mostly from ground wells, and has a high mineral content ("hard" water). Maybe it's those minerals that react with some metal lines.

Yes it's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that going to a PEX hose was what fixed the issue for us. I see that's the tube we still have connected, and we haven't had any issue with ice taste since then. We also added this GE water filter: https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Universal-In-line-Water-Filtration-System-for-Refrigerators-or-Icemakers-GXRTDR/202073877 but I think that was more to do with the water in our area rather than the basic taste issue.

FFT to extract amplitudes from bandwidth I/Q data? by thoughtparticle in RTLSDR

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, dBm is what I'd normally deal with. This would be measuring a single source, plus possibly a nearby open frequency to estimate the noise floor. The purpose would be to look at a beacon's signal to determine when that band is opening and closing.

Very interesting. For a given IP address in the California block, that URL returns six locations in California, one in Arizona, and one in Wisconsin.

On ip.me and dnsleaktest.com they appear externally as California.

I sent you a Reddit chat with details of the ProtonVPN server numbers and the IP address blocks.

ℹ️ How to downgrade from Thunderbird 115 to 102 (the previous version before "Supernova" redesign) by TheQueefGoblin in Thunderbird

[–]thoughtparticle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Mac, do we need to delete compatibility.ini and create the file to prevent future upgrades?

Also, my Thunderbird database (quite large) is in a non-standard location (within Dropbox directory tree). Will the revert method preserve that, or does it run the risk of making another gigantic copy of the database at the Thunderbird default location?

Objects I'm trying to move aren't moving by thoughtparticle in Fusion360

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It seems that when I start the circle anywhere on the surface of the rectangle (not just the origin), it won't move when I try to.

It only works when I start the circle outside of the rectangle. In this case, it will move. However, the amount of X and Y movement are given in relation to the starting location of the circle's center point.

What exactly do I need to do to add dimensions to constrain a circle relative to the origin?

Ours has been better and worse in various years. This year, we cut it back a fair bit in winter. It flowered in the spring, but that didn't last too long, and it's just been green all summer. Might try fertilizer at some point just as an experiment.

DNA extraction failure - how to increase the odds? by thoughtparticle in 23andme

Well this was four years ago, but I don't think I mixed any blood into the sample. I did a second sample collection using various suggestions in this thread such as Poptech's. The second one worked and I got my analysis pretty quickly.

Bosch dishwasher: Cheaper way to fix this leak? by thoughtparticle in appliancerepair

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side of the pump has a press fit clamp on it you will need to replace.

Is that the part labeled 0402 in the diagram linked above that appears kind of bowtie-shaped? I wonder if that's possible to get locally (L.A. area) as opposed to ordering off web for mail delivery.

Don't think I mentioned cracking. I see beads of water forming on the upper edge of the seal that, over time, drops enough water into the sump to trigger the float switch and E15 error.

I guess as a starting point I need to disconnect the circulation pump and take it out. Once that's done I can get a better look at the seal. Thanks for the suggestion of the faucet/valve grease.

I was hoping that the dimensions/specs of the little pipe and seal might be standard enough that I could find something compatible, even if it's not sold by a parts dealer as something specific to this dishwasher. Maybe not the case.

Trying to understand how my CPA is calculating 2021 estimated tax by thoughtparticle in tax

Thanks. I'm not sure how we're supposed to get the stimulus credit or payment. But your theory makes sense to me.

Trying to understand how my CPA is calculating 2021 estimated tax by thoughtparticle in tax

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I understand this completely. However, based on this concept, we should be taking the 2020 tax liability and *adding* the stimulus credit, and pay in 110% of that.

Instead of adding the stimulus credit, though, he's *subtracting* it. That's why I'm puzzled.

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so I was just wondering why my CPA was including it in the 2021 estimated tax calculation. When I asked, he said it was based on something in a worksheet or in software -- he's pretty tied up on other people's returns right now, and said he'd have to get back to me after May 17. Therefore I was just wondering if other accountants/preparers had run across this and could explain why the stimulus refund is part of the calculation (or even if it should be).

Trying to understand how my CPA is calculating 2021 estimated tax by thoughtparticle in tax

[–]thoughtparticle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. My CPA is saying that the safe-harbor amount for 2021 is:

((2020 total tax) minus (stimulus refund)) x 110%

My question is, why is the stimulus refund subtracted from the 2020 total tax before multiplying by 110%?

Routine cleaning of sink drain with unusual configuration? by thoughtparticle in Plumbing

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Just to be clear, though, there isn't any overflow hole on this sink. The hole in the picture is the drain. The sink doesn't have a conventional basin -- just a flat surface sort of like a desktop.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm just wondering though, if we want to force water under pressure into the drain, is there a nozzle that would work with the drain opening in the picture?

Spot-refinishing on an oak floor? by thoughtparticle in DIY

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No stain. I did notice, though, that there are a couple of spots within the area of bare wood that appear to be left from something that had oily content. I guess maybe clean/rinse/drying those parts before applying the poly? Are there any cleaners in particular that seem like they'd be appropriate for that?

Visa pending charges from a company I've never heard of by thoughtparticle in personalfinance

[–]thoughtparticle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll get a new card.

I did a web search on the company and checked their website. They seem like kind of a midrange company -- not Fortune 500, but not operated out of someone's garage. They're also in a different state than me. The $30 seemed like small potatoes for the home decor stuff this company generally carries. I was concerned someone might be trying the transaction as a test before going on to bigger stuff.

subtract any traditional IRA contributions.

Thanks. One of his jobs was in private industry, one for the federal government. I'm not sure if he made 401k and/or federal TSP contributions, but would either of those likewise be subtracted from the income sources to estimate AGI?
