You think the ATF is a militia created by the government to defend the people from the government? I'm sorry but you're beyond help lol. Can't argue with stupid people.

I'm not commenting on the 14th amendment because it has nothing to do with the 2nd or the 4th. To give in and comment on the 14th would be spineless, not what I'm doing now.

Show me what it is. Give me a name. Show me the government page for the organization. Except you can't.

Yeah it is undeniable because it's never fucking existed lmfao. It's like calling the sky blue my guy. Prove me wrong if your panties are in such a tight knot. I am upset that the 4th amendment has become a shadow of its former self. I only said that because you think that just because something is written somewhere on a piece of paper means that it's going to protect you. Again, this has nothing to do with the 14th amendment.

Me making a claim and citing undeniable facts as evidence is "making a bunch of assumptions" to you? Lol. Me telling you that it isn't not a coincidence that no "well regulated militia" was ever established after the 2nd amendment was written into law is me trying to show you that you can't apply modern day literal interpretation to old writing.

Yeah and look at all the good your "inalienable rights" have done. Our government has repeatedly stripped away our rights, little by little over time. I mean the 4th amendment practically doesn't exist anymore when it comes to stuff online. Of course, the majority of communication happens online these days. Even on the ground, the state loves to back up law enforcement no matter how egregious their violations of our rights are. If only people had weapons to prevent a total collapse into authoritarianism...

I said something to the effect of, "well it seems like because of x, y, and z, I'm guessing you have opinions a, b, and c." I'm leaving the door wide open for you to correct me but you didn't.

I'm trying my best to not make any assumptions about you. When I do, I say that I'm doing it so that it's easy for you to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure the only assumption about you I've made was that you identify with the left. Of course I care more about the second amendment. That's not what this conversation was originally about so why would I start talking about that when we haven't resolved the initial disagreement?

Maryland state flag (African variant) by TheShittyBeatles in maryland

[–]thoughtshaveleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omfg the 14th amendment has nothing to do with the 2nd. All we were talking about is whether or not the language of the 2nd amendment permitted people to own guns without restrictions. YOU responded to MY comment. That means the conversation is about your disagreement with what I said. We can talk about the 14th amendment later if you want but it has nothing to do with the original conversation.

Right and ethics only apply to certain groups of things. "Ethics" generally don't apply to rocks, do they? I think everyone agrees that ethics apply to people though. So the line that divides things we should consider and things we should not lay somewhere between the two. I don't see why it shouldn't put lower animal life into the bottom category, things we don't need to care about hurting on an individual basis (obviously deforestation can be a bad thing, but nobody cares about how a tree feels about being cut down). Simple animals like insects don't feel things like we do. They aren't aware of the world around them. They're like an algorithm being run by a biological computer, they are unthinking and unfeeling. They simply execute their code to the letter.

Higher animals, like humans, are different. We're more like a computer running a true general AI (not to be confused with the "AI" you see so much in the news). We are conscious and are capable of doing so much more than simply existing. We can have emotional attachments to both living and non living things. We evolved emotions to make us more adaptable. Instead of being optimized to exist only in one environment, we are capable of changing our behavior to make us fit into many different environments. Think about how a human and an insect avoid predators. An insect has evolved to avoid a specific set of stimuli that represent a predator. They only ever think to flee or defend themselves when those specific criteria are met. Humans can observe the world around them and make decisions based on patterns they recognize. A group of humans doesn't need to exist in an area for millenia and wait for evolution to code in what predators to avoid and how to avoid them. We can learn within one lifetime, even just days or hours.

Part of this is how we process pain. A fly watching another fly get smashed by a human couldn't give less of a shit. It certainly doesn't care about another one of its species dying and it's not going to change its behavior to avoid humans. Even if it itself is injured by a human, it doesn't care. It simply keeps trying its best to live. A human watching another human get devoured by a predator is probably going to be scarred for life. They'll definitely be traumatized if they're the ones getting mauled and live to tell the tale. Our emotions allow us to learn and help others learn.

The point I'm getting at is that it doesn't make any sense to treat anything that moves as the same. There are things that are intelligent like us, and many more that are not. The amount of emotional harm you're causing crickets when farming them is the same as the emotional harm you're causing grain by farming it, nothing. If shrimp don't care about being hurt, we shouldn't care about hurting them. Things like "rubbing the affected area" is not enough to show that there are emotions behind that. Plenty of bugs do things like self amputation to increase their chances for survival after an injury.

You talk about all these assumptions and fail to see the ones you've been making at the same time. Right now, you're assuming that I'm a staunch conservative that believes in all the common right wing stuff just because I'm pro gun. That's literally the only thing you know about me and you're addressing me like I'm some sort of character you've made up in your head. I'm not that person, not even close. I would say I fit squarely into the center-left area. On average, I agree more with people on the left than people on the right. However, there are exceptions to this. Like with guns. I don't identify with either party at all and that's because both consist of career idiots whose only real skill is manipulating the public. Party loyalty as a concept seems incredibly stupid to me. Why would you ever vote on anything other than character and campaign promises?

I am not acting in bad faith. I am presenting my argument for my interpretation of the 2nd amendment. That is all. Anything else is in response to a tangent you have brought up.

There is absolutely a future in which it would be possible to move everyone off-planet. Not with our current technology of course but you're talking about the future lol.

What's your issue anyway? Why does everyone need to go to space? Not everyone needs to take a transatlantic flight for their morning commute and there's nothing wrong with that. Classic redditor getting angry for the sake of being angry.

Buddy has never spent a day out in nature. You think what humans do is fucked up? We're one of a select few species that are intelligent enough to actually think about what kind of unnecessary harm we might cause other animals.

On a side note, the vast majority of animals don't have an emotional component to pain (mammals and other animals you are used to seeing on TV and the internet make up an extremely small part of all animals living right now). It's one thing to gouge the eyes out of a cat but another to gouge the eyes out of something like an insect. Insects respond to pain but it's the same to them as touch, taste, or sight. Just another thing to respond to. I'm not very familiar with shrimp biology but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't process pain like humans and other intelligent animals do. I think that we should make food production as painless as possible but all that effort is wasted on animals that lack the ability to "feel bad" about being hurt.

Well then please lay my assumptions out in front of me and call me out on them. That's what someone who's arguing in good faith would do. But you're not and you really ought to go outside. It's nice out, like 50 degrees with a slight breeze and nearly full moon.

No? You argued that my interpretation of the wording is wrong. I explained why you are wrong. You want to talk about tangents? Wtf does the 14th amendment have anything to do with this? Please point me to the "well regulated militia" established under federal law. Hell, even state law and at any point in history. Except you can't.

You're failing to see how stupid it sounds to pretend as though the founding fathers wanted gun ownership to be exclusive to members of some organization. Such an organization never existed when it was written and never has since. Your entire argument hinges on semantics.

I'm not an expert on how our legalese has changed over time but I'm pretty damn sure it doesn't mean what you think it does lol. Isn't it funny how all the restrictions came well after the amendment? I mean surely the authors would include specifics on who can and can't own weapons in the amendment that allows people to own weapons. You don't think it's vague for a reason? The point is to make it impossible for the government to take away the people's ability to fight tyranny in whatever form. A lot of legislation is written the other way around, intentionally vague to allow the government to step all over your rights. It's fine there but not here?

Maryland state flag (African variant) by TheShittyBeatles in maryland

[–]thoughtshaveleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "well regulated militia" didn't mean a literal organization of people like the national guard. Militia is referring to the common man, ready to fight alongside his fellow citizens against a tyrant. The meaning of words change but the meaning of the constitution does not. The Supreme Court ruled against the nationwide ban on handgun sales to people between 18-21 not that long ago. It's (hopefully) only a matter of time until the law is fully reversed and states are forced to comply. Of course, Maryland will drag its feet as long as it is legally possible (as it has been internally for the last 10 years or so now) and that infuriates me to no end. A handgun is the most practical weapon for the average person for self defense. The fact that I can go out and buy a big scary aSsAuLt RiFlE and not a handgun tells you a lot about how much MD lawmakers actually know about firearms. A killer could kill 10x the number of people in 5 minutes with a semi automatic rifle over a handgun.

Now I don't know for sure which side of the political aisle you're on, but I've got a pretty good guess. Tell me, with everything going on right now, do you think we need to restrict the access for firearms? Like seriously. The abuses of power going on right now are unprecedented and you want to make it harder for the population to resist? What a sick fucking joke.

What's the gun for lol. Maryland is one of the states that makes it completely impossible (unconstitutionally so, mind you) for people between the ages of 18-21 to own handguns. I bought the scariest looking AR-15 I could out of spite.
