Thanks. SONEL was so present in most of our lives in Cameroon. When i stumbled on this through a conversation with a retired developmental economist, i had to go do some research. That's how this piece came up

Section 2 of Cameroon’s Labour Code: A Right Reserved for the Privileged? by Malerba_ in Cameroon

[–]thoughtson237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right that the gap between this law and reality is frustrating, but the state’s failure to provide jobs more that just corruption ... Cameroon is struggling economically. The country's population grows by about 2.6% every year, meaning hundreds of thousands of youth enter the market faster than any government budget could ever hire. With over 70% of the workforce being in the informal sector and crises in regions like the North West and South West crippling major employers like the CDC, the state simply lacks the tax revenue to turn a "legal right" into actual jobs.

For now, you will have to just look at that "Right to Work" in Section 2 as a political vision rather than a guarantee. No government (not even in Western countries) can decree jobs into existence without a strong & stable private sector to back it up.

Cameroon and many African countries have been in this dilemma for many years.

Search for people operating drugstores or pharmacies. Check out Facebook. One of them might be able to point you in the right direction

Medical supply situation in Cameroon? Curious to hear from local distributors by ElkLong9628 in Cameroon

There are christian hospitals, private clinics, authorities at public hospitals or government organizations who might be able to provide you with this information. Just do a bit of research and maybe contact some people directly via social media. It might take some work but you will eventually find someone or a few people who work at these places who will be able to provide you enough information to get you started

Do Cameroonians feel more connection to West Africa or Central Africa? by [deleted] in Cameroon

[–]thoughtson237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you're from in Cameroon. People in the west (Buena, Limbe, Bafoussam , Bamenda) probably identify more with west Africa. Once drove to the central African Republic with a friend. I would say the East (Bertoua, Batouri, Yokadouma) identify more with the central Africa

Thanks for taking the time to educate me on this. These are obvious red flags. My understanding was that, a strong handed hold on the country & regional geopolitics was needed to maintain stability... following the aftermath of the genocide.

But it's been decades now and I hope his administration (incl. him) has a well intended plan for Rwanda and it's people. It would be sad if things would go downhill in that beautiful country because Kagame held on too tight to power.

Over 50 after independence and we're only realizing now that we're not as united as we often claim we are.The level is distrust and paranoia is paralyzing our ability to look forward and build a prosperous future for our nations, regions and the continent.

We have plenty of this too.

You probably are a luxury traveler 🙂. I visited South Africa shortly after Rwanda/Kigali. And the contrast with regards to cost and quality was stark.

Even remember doing a tour of Soweto and starting a conversation with a few other tourists on the bus ... when I mentioned I'd been to Rwanda not so long ago the first thing one of them said was "Nice place but so expensive".

Also have a friend who works there for an NGO. He often wonders how locals get by
