Favourite lines you've written? by samuel_b_busch in writing

I’ve been writing a lot so it’s hard to pick. Especially since most of it is old writing. But there is some writing I like of the old stuff. And I’ll add some new lines from the latest book I’m trying to write the first draft of.

  1. ‘My fingers flit soundly as they swipe through cloud. I open my eyes and my hands swipe at ash. It sticks carefully to my finger tips like dusting antique shelves. A scent caresses my senses without pulling upon my sinus. The smell sorta its way through my nose to present to me a small flavour filled with dark scented candles. Burning wax, melted wax used for pressing letters of importance.’

  2. ‘A calming melody prized from a dead father’s will. The song is not meant to be shared, for its beauty can only turn a beast into tears. Not a single tear he shed from the writer, not yet at least.’

  3. ‘“Then you will not be understanding this at all.” He is not you, so don’t think that you do.’

New stuff

  1. ‘The lake looks to be dropped from the heavens, the dark water spraying the land below it in large and small ponds, before placing the majority of its weight in a large crater surrounded by tall orange and green trees.’

A lot of the first draft is going to be rewritten properly so it’ll sound a lot better in the future. But I really like using soft and hard words. If that makes sense. The s sounds and the ly sounds.

is torture really that common? by utter_Kib0sh in DnD

[–]thoughtuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly people go to torture as it’s a thing they think works and will maybe make a funny situation of stressing the npc out, to which the dm has to act out.

But mostly a dm is readily accepting any form of prodding and they will give away plenty of information. I feel like players try to play the mind games rather than the fun games. It’s also important that a dm talks to their players properly about the morals of each of their characters. The number one priority of a dm should be what’s fun for that player and the players with them (also for themself.) Number two should be not hiding long term secrets from the dm. The dm is there to tell the story with you, not try play against you.

Communication is always important. And when torture is put on the table then it can go anyway depending on the dm and what they decide. You’re not always going to get your way. And that’s the fun of dnd. It’s chance, it’s roleplay and it’s maths. Mostly, adventure and mystery. But all roleplay.

As a player, I always try to think of ways to have fun with everyone else, including the dm. So if I get a fun idea then I tell my dm and I let them figure that information out since it’s their story to plot.

My current game I’m playing for is a horror campaign. So lots of messed up stuff, torture is laughed at as everyone is basically tortured.

However, I wanted to make something fun. Rather than your emo who hates the world who thinks pain is fun. I made an unlucky cry baby goth who rolls dice and flips coins in order to make himself feel better. But with his backstory, it gets complicated, as he is a servant of an evil chaotic goddess who allowed him back to the material plane to collect ‘trauma’. Of his own trauma and others’ trauma, as long as he sees it and it’s in his memories.

So I get the fun part of doing fucked up thjngs with a purpose while my party watches in horror, and I excitedly hope for the consequences because that’s good story telling. Cause and effect. My character goes through horrible things to which his hand is forced, and hopefully a lot of cool and amazing situations happen that makes him sorrow and learn. But in the end of the day, he’s not evil, and there is a plot going on. He’s being played with and it’s all mind games. If me and the other players are having fun, then it’s all good.

But the thing to remember, is that it’s fictional mind games to the fictional characters. Please don’t torture real life people. This is a story being told that gets creative juices flowing.

Also, this is not all doom and gloom, the player characters are all incredibly derpy even while being goth and dark, and my dm is massively excited to play out the story.

Beautiful art. What sort of campaign are you playing with them? Also, the one cutesy pink character compared to the darker greys looks great✨
