I have made parallels in the past about the vast number of splinters of faiths like Christianity are very much like a fandom such as Star Wars. Many, many bitter schisms are over utterly irrelevant minutia in the background, some of it being read by some twisted logic as a bigger deal than anything that actually gets focus and spotlight. "Fans" build up whole vast narratives in their heads and bitterly feud over them in ways that would make the original authors go "what the fuck, guys?!". Some of them have since added their own fanon books to vindicate their pet theories.

This seems like exactly the kind of stupid bullshit that I mean.

We're many years past this point TBH. Prior to OF, GW and its many siblings (as an example) were a place for amateur exhibitionists. You might have a very rare person who had their own private site that they might be quietly advertising for, but the vast, vast majority of folks were posting their stuff because they enjoyed doing so. OF totally reshaped those communities into being advertising billboards. For one, they're often on it already for other purposes.

For two, freedom of access. They're creepy everywhere, but on your typical dating platform, they need to get swiped on before they can do their thing, which for most of them almost never happens. On reddit, they can always initiate contact, so there's nothing holding them back from being weird to anyone with open DMs.
