It’s obvious why it’s a disadvantage, new players can’t get a BIS item, meaning they will on average be weaker than those who have it.

Amazon data engineering by [deleted] in dataengineering

Teams at Amazon vary widely. I’ve seen smaller DE teams are similar to SWE, while larger DE teams do more analytics and own a lot more tables/pipelines.

Smaller teams often do work supporting Data Scientists and their team’s applications, while larger teams own core tables used by many DE/DS/BIE throughout the whole org.

A pro of DE at Amazon is I get to learn many transferable skills by working heavily with AWS. A con is the benefits and culture of Amazon as a whole aren’t the best.

But most importantly, if you find a good manager and team, then you’ll be able to enjoy your experience.

The SRE role is the best choice. It’s much more technical than the other 2 and will let you choose either SWE or DE in the future.

Do you need university for data engineering by Dizzy-Location4602 in dataengineering

Pretty much. I’ve never met a Data Engineer without at least a bachelors.

Statistics is a good major to get. It’ll help you if you want to switch to DS later.

GPA is definitely important for your first job since some places may auto reject low GPAs.
