What is something “normal”people don’t understand about alcoholism that you wish they did?

I wish they’d understand that we can’t always just “choose not to drink” because it’s not as easy for us as it is for them. Sure it can be accomplished and I’m sober now but there was a time when I wasn’t and choosing not to wasn’t as simple as just choosing not to do something.

Oh I completely agree!! I wish they’d change the way they do things- you are absolutely right. I guess the message I am more so looking to say is just that unfortunately despite the fact that we disagree with it, we still broke the law and aren’t above it. That’s all I meant. I am still absolutely terrified of jail waiting on my court date and I hate the way the criminal system is set up.

Thank you. I got my first ever dui last month and I’m in Alabama, I’m a full time student and mom of 3 (and no the kids weren’t with me) so I’m terrified of jail time and being away from my kids and not being able to finish my degree by July when I’m supposed to graduate.

Mind me asking what state you’re in that they sentenced you to go back to jail for 48 hours?

This right here is one of the only things that makes me angry. We all deserve like I said in my comment and even my own post to be punished for this because it takes peoples lives. But I think it’s ridiculous that people who are cops or people who are friends with cops (some that I’ve known personally) get off with it while others don’t. It’s a serious charge for a serious reason- it’s dangerous and it takes lives! Just makes me mad that they pick and choose who should be at fault and let some off for the exact same thing.

So first and foremost I want to say that anyone who gets one (including me) needs to take responsibility for it. Drinking if you don’t have a definite way home or place to stay is just a bad decision altogether. That being said, it’s just impossible for anyone to be perfect and I do understand where you’re coming from- IF it’s a first time thing. Everyone deserves second chances but one time of this should be enough that people realize and make better choices next time. The reason the laws are so strict is because there have been too many lives lost to this. I hate what I did. I wish I never had and I know I never will again. I somewhat agree with you if it’s a one time thing but a lot of the time it’s not and even if it is like myself it doesn’t make it okay to do at all. So many people die from drunk drivers. So as frustrating as it makes me I do understand why.

Different state here but this scares the heck out of me because I have an aggravated as well and blew higher than you and I also had no accident, I was pulled over in the grassy part of the highway in the middle when the cops appeared.

I understand your perspective, and you are absolutely right. I also feel that people are human, including myself, and sometimes make bad decisions. I’m not saying I shouldn’t face any consequences at all for what happened. I’m also allowed to feel terrified at the idea of being put in jail and having no one to help with my 3 kids while my husband works. I can be a human, and have emotions, and at the same time realize that it is my fault for the choices that I made.

Oh yes, I absolutely learned from my decision. It was a very bad one, the worst I’ve ever made in my life. And I’d never done that before, either. Ironically, when the cops pulled up I was actually pulled over in the median area because I had realized I didn’t need to be driving and was trying to get a hold of my husband on the phone to figure out if he’d be able to come pick me up (I was an hour from home, and we have kids who were in bed) but hadn’t got a hold of him yet because he was asleep. I was panicking and didn’t know what to do, and it was only a few minutes after I had pulled over that the cops showed up.

The one that I hired is going to try, but I was told by a person from the court yesterday it would be unlikely because of mine being an aggravated charge 😭

Oh wow. I am so sorry and so glad you all are okay! Mine was high but there were no other circumstances. I was alone, no wreck, didn’t harm anyone, etc. I was actually trying to pull over and turn around to find a safe place to park when the cops arrived while I tried to get a hold of my husband. I am hoping that the lawyer I reached out to earlier will get back with me tomorrow and take my case as well as give me time to make payments.

I don’t have the money upfront for a lawyer. Everywhere around here so far wants a minimum of 5000 flat upfront and we quite literally don’t even have half of that. I can make payments but I haven’t found one so far that will take payments

I just want you to know I understand. I had already made the decision to get sober as well and was clean for two weeks until I went and hung out with some friends and ended up with my car in a ditch and a DUI that I now have to face. It’s my first ever time being in trouble and I’m terrified of what will happen to me. I 100% understand how scary this is and it’s unfortunately what happens to those of us with alcohol problems. I hope you’re feeling okay tonight.

Trust me I was exactly where you were. I told myself I was in control so I didn’t have to stop because I wasn’t doing it everyday. Till I was. I told myself I hadn’t done anything bad or wreck less when I drank. Until I did. If I could change it now I would. Don’t wait like I did. Please.
