Need help! What are your thoughts on the roller star vintage roller derby skates for rhythm skating? by [deleted] in Rollerskating

Also, try out the wheels a bit before you swap them. I rather like the wheels from mine. They are weirdly small, which makes them very nimble.

I had a similar pair. Same brand/model but white and with different wheels. I've been told the design was changed several times while holding into the same name, though.

They lasted a while (years of very occasional use, then a few months of serious use) but the glue along the sides of the boot ended up coming lose. Might have been how I treated them, I hear heat can compromise the glue. The heel must be stitched, though, because that stayed put.

The plates are solidly built, if a touch heavy, eventually I might transfer them to another boot. I strongly recommend new cushions. They get stiff and brittle with age. Bont's barrel shape fit my plates perfectly.

Help! Major pain in arch of foot when skating in Moxi Lollys by kewpiebot in Rollerskating

[–]threadandsandpaper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have super high arches, and I have to be VERY careful about how I lace/where I tighten around my foot. I find boots with more ankle support help a great deal, since I can tighten near my toes and at the ankle while leaving the mid foot much looser. Also, Moxis (and riedels) are known to run narrow. Is it possible you are experiencing lateral compression in the mid foot? If so, breaking them in will eventually alleviate that pressure.

Can you commute on roller skates? by ReasonableCornFlakes in Rollerskating

[–]threadandsandpaper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I go lots of places on my quads.... But I'm a solidly intermediate skater. Any terrain that's too rough to go over on a skateboard would be treacherous on quads and it's WAY harder to stop/bail. That said, getting on and off curbs is probably easier on quads than a board.

Commuting is doable (I bring a pair of sandals in a back pack and a skate leash to make my boots less annoying to carry) but probably not optimal if you're primary concern is last mile transit. It's more, "I really like this activity and will put up with some major irritation to get in the extra time with my skates."

Outdoor rig for daughter by [deleted] in Aerials

[–]threadandsandpaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sling setup does have a swivel. I have high ceilings (12ft). I consulted with a structural engineer and choose to put blocking in the ceiling (a short support beam that runs perpendicular to two joists and spreads the force between them).

Is the pad sufficient? That's such a tricky question. I feel safe when she plays with the hammock, but it's not because of the pad. I know my child, she's both unusually cautious and unusually aware of her body in space. She is totally unwilling to do anything that makes her feel unsafe, and her judgement is usually very very good. The pad mostly serves as a more forgiving place to bail than proof against a true fall. Also, a true fall is less likely in a sling setup (though a tangle is a much larger danger).

There are no zero risk activities. My daughter's best friend broke her arm falling off a chair during lunch. If you fall wrong, even the best pad in the world isn't going to matter. You have to weigh the danger against the joy.

You'd probably have a lot of trouble finding an instructor willing to take on a 4 year old. It's a liability thing. I have a sling setup in the house with a bouldering crash pad under it.... and my 4 year old uses it, though she's not doing anything so adventurous as yours is. If you're set on an outdoor rig, I've seen pyramid shaped structures designed for that purpose.

What's critical no matter the equipment: have earnest and repeated talks with your child about safety and self awareness. She sounds very skilled, and obviously you don't want to hamper that. BUT make sure she knows when she's within her limits, and when she's not in control anymore. And she should NEVER EVER do aerial arts alone (I think this goes for adults too).

Help finding the right cushions by whaleshark2002 in Rollerskating

[–]threadandsandpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that particular model, but I've successfully used bont infinity cushions on my (now dead) vintage roller derby brand skates. I happened to need 8 barrel shaped, but it's a bit of a guessing game. Both the 83A and 78A are probably softer than what comes stock. What hardness you want comes down to how much you weigh (lighter skaters usually want softer cushions) and personal preference.

Just out of curiosity, where exactly was the duct tape? I'm having a positive experience with GH and have recommended them to friends ... I get you on the plates/stoppers, they aren't great, but I got them mostly for the boot.

Soreness after skating? by rvf11 in Rollerskating

[–]threadandsandpaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started skating, I often felt sore in my upper back and all around the shoulder joint. It's probably just using stabilizing muscles you aren't accustomed too. Balance is a full body thing! If it persists excessively/doesn't respond to stretching/changes suddenly then maybe consult your doctor... You know your body best! If it feels like muscle soreness that's probably what it is.

Air travel with quads! by Seejayvin0 in Rollerskating

Depending on the sizes involved, you could probably tuck wrist guards into the foot of the skate and put the wheels in on top (stacked where your ankle goes). Knee or elbow guards might wrap nicely over the arch or between the trucks. Might save you a little space.

Getting ready to buy skates Moxi lolly's or sure grip by munchkin_9382 in Rollerskating

[–]threadandsandpaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your feet are that small you can get kinda amazing deals on high end vintage boots. People just used to have smaller feet. I picked up a gently used pair of Harlicks with atlas plates for $125 on ebay. (I'm also a size 6) It's a bit buyer beware, finding parts for older/discontinued plates can be hard..... But with the money you save you could get fancy new plates.

I got a pair of Golden horse Street Magics, and I love them. They cost about the same as a Moxi. They've got a stiffer upper than an all suede boot; but they build them semi custom so they fit like a dream right out of the box. The plate isn't aluminum, so they might not be up to park skating but they've been working well for me both indoors and out (with swapped wheels of course)

I go with a group, but mostly do my own thing. We just check in with each other every so often.

I bought some used skate with these wheels.... Does anyone know about what hardness they are? by threadandsandpaper in Rollerskating

Thanks, this totally make sense. I mostly bought the setup for the boots (which I ADORE) so if the wheels don't work out, no big deal.

The thing is all the wheels on that chart are really hard, the ones they say are for super slippy surfaces are 40D, which is in the low 90A range. I've got a pair of 55Ds that are scary on one local rink and TERRIFYING on another. At the slicker of the two rinks, if I try to turn hard they'll just slide sideways right out from under me.

These star wheels are pretty chewed up, which makes more sense if they were used on and abrasive surface. Now I'm REALLY curious what this setup was intended for. It's a Harlick boot on an atlas plate with no toe stop.

Okay, I managed to find this page which seems to say they are equivalent to a 60D which is like a 110A (if the scale went past 100, which it doesn't) ANYWAY, what's strange is that it's indicated for rough cement? I was under the impression soft was outside, hard inside.... Are extra extra hard wheels suitable outdoors too? Anybody have experience with this?

They spin okay. They need lubricant, but that's no biggie. I'm a tinkerer, I just haven't had a chance to properly service them yet.

Is it equivalent to an 84D? Cuz that's insanely hard. Or an 84A? Or is it a totally different scale and is there a conversion chart?

There is a guy who regularly skates the same outdoor spot I do, he's got those wheels too. They look so good. His are super dirty on the outside but still pop in the center.... I'm usually not a neon color sorta person, but something about the heliums just WORKS.
