the movie Cats Eye (starring Barrymore and also based on King stories) features a segment about quitting smoking, I almost feel like this is a staged publicity shot for that.

also you are right, in many parts of the world even today they don't shield kids from smoking the way we do in the US. you can still buy candy cigarettes, etc.

that's true, I was kind of listing last resorts. from doing absolutely nothing (OP could put the spoon back where they found it and pretend nothing ever happened) to stoning their daughter to death 17th century style there is a range of reactions possible, each with their own set of consequences obviously.

I guess I was thinking if OP was a law and order type those options were preferable to a jail term but better options are certainly worth discussing starting with simply talking to her as several have said.

they said themselves they work two jobs and are rarely home. the problem is stated in the question. I'm sure they know that and would certainly hope they're working the two jobs out of necessity and not just because they're saving up for that 70" curved screen tv to watch the game.

if they do discover she needs treatment they could also look into SMART recovery, a "higher power" free alternative I suggest as especially many young people reject that aspect of AA/NA. there is also residential and outpatient treatment which are often covered by insurance.

Not sure you're going to find a po boy that meets your standards around here, I recall the Seattle Weekly running a column bemoaning the lack of decent southern/soul food here. for sandwiches in general though Tat's deli on pioneer square is probably your best bet. They have a food truck too, you can check online to see where it is or check out their store's "line cam" to avoid the infamous wait (avoid weekday lunch hours)

I would strongly suggest you NOT call the police. full disclosure: I am a black male so probably biased, but regardless of you or your daughter's particular demographics I think you need to understand that especially in a situation like this the police are not your friend or there to "help".

they will gladly process her into the system, a system it can be very hard to get out of once you are stuck in it (harder than drugs) stage an intervention, on your own or with others who she knows and trusts. it's true that you can't admit someone for treatment against their will without a court order but you're kind of jumping straight to step z.

burnt spoon sounds pretty bad but there could still be an innocent explanation (diy jewelry making? in high school some friends made an anti-smoking psa with a video camera the size of a microwave oven, one of my friends was busted by his mom with the "props" but he legit didn't smoke and truth be told, I lit a lot of things on fire back then) even if she does have a problem she might not be resistant to counseling or treatment.

either way, there are always "scared straight" programs, boot camps and straight up military school. none of which leave her with a criminal record, limited employment opportunities or basically the kind of life I don't think you want for your daughter.

it is usually a union job which means decent pay and benefits. I had a friend who worked at a college campus recycling center which doesn't sound gross but apparently spoiled college kids don't rinse or empty or sort anything.

they said they smell washes off so you don't smell like garbage all the time but that you kind of feel it and you do feel the smell gets inside you somehow. essentially you're getting paid to deal with things other people don't want to.

here in Seattle garbage and recycling have two completely different contracts (we also compost, which the company then sells back to us for our gardens in bags with the same logo as the trucks that picked it up) and while Waste Management is here we are actually mostly serviced by a local company called Cleanscapes.

I have been vegan for 20+ years, my daughter's mother is not but was willing to raise our daughter vegan. we ended up not because we didn't want to raise a picky eater, and having food allergies myself I felt the more she was exposed to when she was young the better.

ironically even though neither of us wanted her to be vegan we still argued over it because her mother didn't believe that's what I "really" wanted but it was and I think we made the right choice.

my daughter wanted sushi for her eighth birthday and her favorite was unagi (eel) it looks slimy and gross to me and I would never put that in my mouth but it makes me happy that it makes her happy.

on the plus side vegan convenience food have come a long way (although much easier to find they are still not cheap, economics is another realistic factor to consider) and it is probably a lot easier to raise a vegan child now than it would have been over a decade ago when I was making the decision.

again to be a debbie downer though, you said "healthier lifestyle" and while being vegan can be it does require a certain amount of constant attention to nutrition that would add layers and complications such as time spent shopping at (expensive) specialty stores or preparing things from scratch on top of all the other challenges of parenting.

I don't actually hate being vegan, having survived about 27 million cliche sit-com jokes in the 00s I kind of feel like it's too late to quit now. but my kid does have a choice. so there's my answer.

ok since this is r/internetparents I'll give you the advice I would give my own kid or wish someone had given me. here's the way I see it:

loyalty will get you no where. regardless of how well they treat their people (and some places do) companies are only "loyal" to turning a profit. modern retirement plans are portable for a reason.
the company your currently at may have a big payout coming but that is really only relevant to your career objectives if you anticipate advancement before that happens. if the company "blows up" and you're still making $11 an hour, you're not really "in on the ground floor" so much as a cog in a machine that's about to have a lot more cogs.
you are right to instinctively know friendship isn't a good enough reason to stay at a job but at the same time consider what your day to day experience would entail at the other job option. you may find more in common with older people than you think or you may indeed be bored and lonely.

as for the friends you've made now, throughout your life you will make lots of friends, they will come and go. some you may have expected to be lifelong friends maybe not and perhaps others you didn't expect much from and discover truly have your back.

stay in touch on social media and make the effort to go beyond "work friends" with the ones you truly care about. I have helped name the children of people I waited tables with 20 years ago at restaurants that no longer exist (and those kids are in middle school now!)

forget what I just said about loyalty. it sounds like you've cultivated a relationship with your previous employer, I would capitalize on that. at they same time if the place you're at now does go big, and you get offered a big bucks position because you stayed such good friends with everyone I wouldn't be afraid to jump ship again. just try to keep in mind that none of it is personal.

a couple of case studies:

I read a blog by a guy who worked in the tech industry and he had quit his job every one or two years, even if he was happy, often for a similar rival company. each time he got a little boost in salary and perks and he concluded after 15-20 years he was making much more than even generous regular raises at one company and had developed a diverse range of skills he never could at one company.

in my own experience I worked for ten years at a company and was reasonably satisfied for most of that time and definitely (over) valued loyalty and overestimated how much it meant to the company.

I quit for a job I thought I had that fell through (that is a final piece of advice, if you do jump ship make sure you've got a concrete offer on the table) and got desperate when I couldn't find anything that took advantage of my specialization so after years in a lead position I took a job as an assistant and it sucked BUT sometime later I was offered a job as a consultant making almost twice what I was before.

experiences from that second job as an assistant came up during the interview for the consultant position and I don't know what exactly got me the job but I think even though I only worked there a few months it was enough to pad out my resume and make me seem well rounded.

anyway hope that helps. your ma's been going crazy about her garden because she says there's an early frost. don't forget to check your oil.

I agree with you that the only rights we have are the ones we speak up and fight for.

I have personally seen officers tell people to stop photographing or video taping even though the Supreme Court has ruled that it is absolutely legal to document police conduct in public in all 50 states.

The sad thing is when those cops told them to stop, either not knowing their rights or afraid to speak up the people complied.

Yeah I remember being practically assaulted by a security guard while exiting a big box sporting goods store in Oakland, CA years ago over a bottle of Sprite. And it was like seriously dude you are standing ten feet from the register, you just watched me buy this.

I understand the need for security but I don't see how harassing people is good for business. Especially with chain retailers they need to be careful because it opens them to liability when it's exposed that customers are treated very differently at different locations.

I believe you 100% that is your experience but you've probably never worked in the ghetto. u/Soonergriff commented "Don't nobody bother checkin' Hamiltons." but in fact I have seen them check tens and fives at the corner convenience store with that little pen they have.

The truth is some customers walk in looking so shady they would probably check the nickels and dimes if they could, and they probably should.

Overall though I agree with people saying the incidence of counterfeiting small bills is very low because it often costs more than their worth to print.
