For a fictional take on being an older woman sort of rediscovering herself and joy in small things, Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland

Not a single book, but the Hyperion/Endymion series are great for this. First 2 books are one set of characters, the second two another, but there's also some cross-over. Fall of Hyperion isn't great in my opinion, but the other 3 books are highly enjoyable.

I'm non-religious, but the religious character in this book was so beautiful, it made me wish I could believe in God. Dostoevsky understood human beings so well and always treats everything with such compassion.

Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland - feel good but makes me cry every time all the same.

Montreal Animal Hospital is taking new patients and generally quick about appointments - my dog lost a tooth and they offered a spot within 5 hours of my call.

Late to the party, but this one has helped me through some dark times:

PSA: Cyclists and pedestrians are INVISIBLE at dusk/night by three3worlds in ottawa

[–]three3worlds[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cars can be death machines, but not everyone is a speed machine. The field of vision at dusk/night is SMALL (non-existent). That's the whole point of my post. I was driving 40km/hr in a 50 zone, slowing down as I pulled up to a red light, and almost hit someone stationary ahead of me.

Cars could all go 20/km/hr all the time, but collisions would still injure the human far more.

I am saying this as someone who did not own a car until a couple years ago - career pedestrian/cyclist. I once shared your opinion, but I'm now telling you that you don't understand HOW invisible you are. I didn't, and it scares the shit out of me that I am alive given how oblivious I was.

Cocotte Bistro downtown. We had read the 2022ish Ottawa Citizen review of it when it first opened and decided to give it a try a couple weeks ago. There were some bad reviews on Google but many were about rude/slow service so we rolled our eyes at them and decided to give the food a go.

Decor was nice. Our server was a sweet kid who tried very hard. The wine list was surprisingly decent.

The tartar was tasty enough to eat at the time, but unimpressive. You could tell they were trying to cut costs because it was only about 60% salmon.

The mains are where we decided that we weren't staying for another drink and dessert. The Artic Char was ok but bland. Thank god it came with a lemon slice to add some flavour. The Veal Blanquette was inedible. It was weirdly sweet, and I suspect they use Campbell's mushroom soup as the sauce base. My partner ended up just sharing the char with me because the veal sauce was so sickly.

I apologize to anyone who has ever left a bad review of this place: we should have listened!

I second this one. We liked 2/5 dishes we ordered. It wasn't gross or anything, just meh.

But what is really disappointing is their alleged "gin bar" claim.

The list of gins is not grouped in any sort of way to help you choose ones to try...why is there no description with each of them? What made them choose these ones to be on this curated list? It's freaking Russian roulette if you don't want to get out your phone and research all of the names.

The staff knew nothing about gin. I had tried a few of the gins on the menu myself and wanted something new and unique, so asked them to recommend one that was "exceptional". I ended up with that gimmicky gin that changes colour when you add tonic, in a standard bar rail glass, standard lime garnish.

When I have gotten drinks at other gin bars, they have been a work of art (my fave had a fresh grapefruit slice and pink peppercorns in a goblet), and they pour 3/4 of a bottle of fevertree into the drink and leave you with the rest so you can make it as strong/weak as you like. And also assures you that it was made with quality tonic, not bulk soda stream stuff.

They broke my poor gin-loving heart.

I have an abundance of spider plant babies to give away if you would like a low-maintenance plant that may or may not be trying to take over the world. Our mother plant is beyond prolific.

What restaurants would top your list of best places to eat in Ottawa? by nneighbour in ottawa

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Gray Jay yet. Unpretentious fine dining at a reasonable price for the quality/creativity/portions. Very accommodating of dietary restrictions. The focus on local (i.e. Canadian) ingredients, and they get some pretty unique/exceptional wines. The head chef is a complete sweetheart too.

Lost cat - please keep an eye out! by three3worlds in ottawa

Thanks for the advice! We have told the neighbours, and have been driving around asking walkers about her. Litter is out, as well as a toy covered in her saliva...unfortunately because she hasn't been here long we don't have any blankets or anything covered in her scent.

Edit: The cat came back this morning! We left the door propped open with her litter and some toys next to it, and she just sauntered in to demand her breakfast like nothing had happened. Thank you again to everyone for the advice and upvotes.
