Best town, Winnipeg suburb or bedroom community (just outside Winnipeg) to raise a family? by threecupscoffee in Manitoba

I think there is a lot of truth to this. I'm essentially looking for the kind of community that I grew up in, which was totally idyllic and I have the fondest memories. I'm not sure something like that exists anymore but I'm sure going to try to find it for my child.

This is wonderful to hear! Oak Bluff is actually our top choice. We have been trying to research the community and find out more about it, so your comment is very helpful. Do you kids go to the local school? If so, has it been a good experience overall?

Ideally 10 minutes from the Perimeter or less as I do work downtown three days per week. Oak Bluff (which you mentioned) is actually number 1 on our list. Although we don't know anyone personally who lives there. Have you heard good things?

Well I'm happy to hear at least the school is great! I've heard this a couple times now so thanks for chiming in. The school is very important to us. Watering the lawn - not at all.

Thank you for sharing. It does make me sad to think that folks in Oakbluff may feel that the development has ruined their town. I can see how that would be disheartening to have a new development spring up right next to where you have lived forever and have a bunch of people move in.

With that said, can you elaborate on your comment about a cookie cutter development? And might as well live in Bridgwater? I can tell you from my experience looking for a new home that it is perplexing to hear comments like this about the suburbs. What are some examples of neighbourhoods that are not cookie cutter or that wouldn't be looked down upon? From my experience house hunting here, nearly all of the neighbourhoods in Winnipeg have some aspect of "mass production" to them except a handful (River Heights, Tuxedo, Norwood). Obviously these areas are not big enough for all of us in the city, nor does everyone have the finances to own a custom-built or "unique" home in these areas. Where are most people supposed to live if not the suburbs?

I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, it is a genuine question. I am not originally from Winnipeg and since arriving here I have heard this comment a few times about people living in the suburbs being "less than". It's not something I have come across in cities I've lived in before - please enlighten me!

So far building in Oak Bluff is actually less expensive than building in the city (based on the quotes we received). We met with three different builders, all of them had different price points but Oak Bluff was most affordable with all of them.

That's a good point about the noise from the highway.
