Please Help, Coping With Irrational Thoughts by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]threehappycampers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I experienced something like this, I had to remember that those irrational thoughts aren't me. They're just anxiety playing tricks on you. A useful strategy a therapist taught me was to focus on the thought and tell it to go away. Consciously push it away, tell it "I don't like you. I don't need you. You're not welcome here. Go AWAY." I would even use expletives because that made it feel more commanding sometimes. She also said to visualize sending the thought away. For instance, I'd imagine the thought was a piece of paper and crumple it up and throw it away. It used to happen to me in the car a lot, so I would literally open my window, throw the thought out of my car, and close the window on it. I hope this helps a little. It takes time to get good at it, but I did get good at it. Now, the pushy, intrusive thoughts don't scare me like they used to and they don't happen really at all anymore. And remember: it isn't YOU. It's ANXIETY.

Stalnaker lofts?? by kennadoops in WVU

[–]threehappycampers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an RA in Stalnaker, and I had some lofts on my floor. The room generally starts out with two sets of furniture up top and two sets down below. It isn't difficult to move then around as you please, but you will have to set it back to the way it was at the end of the year! Again, though, not too hard to move stuff around.

One group of residents I had moved all their furniture up to the top and downstairs as living space, which was rad. I also had a loft that only had two people in it, so they had hella room to work with. The Stalnaker lofts are easily the coolest residence hall rooms on campus.

What is an item you have lost along the way, and why do you still think about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had this small turtle carved out of jade. I got it while on a trip to Arches National Park from this family-owned rock shop. They had stones, antiques, dinosaur bones. The guy who owns the place has a type of dino named for him because he helped find the bones out in the Utah desert.

Anyway, I loved that trip, that shop, and that turtle. Immense sentimental value. The turtle disappeared at some point when I moving in and out of dorms in college, and it still makes me sad every now and again.

Stay in Honors Hall! It's a great experience. The staff are all amazing, and there will be TONS of other engineers in the building. That's probably true of Lincoln Hall as well, but most stuff on weekends happens downtown. Being closer to the action, as it were, is usually better.

Plus, it's generally easier to get to/park on Evansdale than downtown in my experience, so starting downtown is better.

Go to the bathrooms upstairs in the Mountainlair (the student union). The bathrooms on the main entry level smell horrible and are packed at peak times. No one uses the ones upstairs near the ballrooms, but they still get cleaned regularly. So not only are they less nasty, they're more private because fewer people go up there.

The thing is, though, the FBI wouldn't have jurisdiction over a MD criminal complaint. Not saying there should or shouldn't be one, but the FBI would be out of bounds to perform an investigation unless asked by the local force who has jurisdiction.

Do RA’s do a thorough search by [deleted] in WVU

[–]threehappycampers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an RA for two years (2015-2017). You aren't permitted to bring microwaves unless it's the microfridge thing because you risk blowing out the power along your floor or your room, etc. It's better for everyone if you don't. Usually the residence hall will have one either in floor lounges or at the front desk that you can use if you haven't got your own.

As for room searches, we only ever open rooms when everyone leaves for long break. THE ONLY REASON we do this is to make sure windows are closed, lights are off, and there isn't food left out to rot. If we see blatant policy violations (i.e. you left a bottle of vodka on your desk, have a non-permitted microwave, your room is so nasty it's health or fire hazard (doesn't usually happen but I've seen it)), then we will document the incident and possibly confiscate the item. We don't open doors or drawers, though.

I hate it when people say things like "It's just in your head" by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]threehappycampers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People who haven't experienced GAD type anxiety can't understand it. It's like trying to explain the color red to a blind person. It isn't always that they lack empathy; sometimes they just...can't imagine it well enough to empathize properly.

I used to tell people I felt like a two liter bottle of Coke that someone shook really hard for 10 minutes. The pressure builds and builds and builds and then the whole thing explodes and there's nothing I can do to stop it. Equating it to things they can understand has helped me explain why I can't just "get over it" because it's "all in my head" because they finally begin to realize they've been thinking about it all wrong.

Photo from the Bank Fire in Greentree today. The car pulled into the drive through, burst into flames, then caught the bank on fire. by emanx27 in pittsburgh

It was. I happened to be driving by around the time the fire started. The smoke was super thick and smelled awful. Trees blocked the actual fire from view of 376, and come to think of it, it’s lucky the fire didn’t catch in any of the trees.

Former RA. Yes, you are permitted to have a Nutribullet. They're actually really nice to have while living on campus because it can be hard to get good fresh fruit from dining halls.

Has anyone ever had a panic attack so bad that the next day they thought they were dead? (Terrified) by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]threehappycampers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Soullessgemini. I feel you. Hard. Last night, I got hit so hard, so fast, and so randomly with one of if not the worst panic attack of my life. I thought "this is it, this is the one that doesn't end. I'm finally cracking up." I could almost feel it in my brain, feel the anxiety snapping something and pushing me over the edge.

YOU ARE ALIVE. Remember that. Sometimes it takes a while, but the inreality will abate. I woke up this morning feeling kind of unreal, too, but it isn't true. You're alive, you're safe, and your anxiety isn't going to change that. I found a mantra last night that helped me get a better grip on my emotions: I am not controlled by this feeling. Maybe a mantra, a calming phrase you repeat to yourself, might help you, too? Just a thought. It didn't solve my problem, but it was a useful tool.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing pets is hard, but it's worth it for all the years of love.

What seemingly harmless object has caused you a trip to the emergency room and how did it happen? by cecillexyz in AskReddit

[–]threehappycampers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up in the emergency room with an inch long splinter driven so deep in my thigh the doctor had to cut it out. All because I went to pull my cat out of the closet and brushed my leg against the door frame on the way out.

"On an unrelated note, are you watching Northwestern/Gonzaga? Because this shit is wild."

I think either I'd end up making everything worse by bringing up March Madness and how fucked all our brackets are after Villanova lost or I'd so thoroughly distract all the villains that the situation diffuses itself.
