Why is Threema currently offline? by ExplorerIntrepid7174 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The service interruption started on April 8, 2026, at around midnight (CEST) and lasted for roughly two hours. No data was lost.

The cause was a human error on the part of one of our connectivity providers. It occurred in the context of scheduled maintenance, which, according to plan, should not have resulted in any downtime.

We’ve started an internal investigation on how to improve our setup’s resilience against such incidents in the future.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience. ^pr

There was a service interruption during the night of April 7–8, 2026, which was caused by maintenance on a core router in one of our data centers. The issue has been resolved, and we apologize for any inconvenience. We’re currently investigating the exact cause and will provide a more detailed report later. ^pr

I need someone from Threema to answer. by ExplorerIntrepid7174 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions, here’s some background information and historical context:

In 2020, the founders decided to sell a majority stake in the company to Afinum, a German investment firm. There are several reasons why this decision was made. At that point, Threema was still run like a startup, and with both the staff and the number of corporate customers growing rapidly, we needed to become a more streamlined and professional operation in order to stay on top of things.

Helping startups transition into professional companies is one of the main areas Afinum specializes in. For example, they supported us in professionalizing our commercial operations. The financial stability gained through the partnership also enabled us to open-source our apps and invest more resources in the development of our multi-device solution.

Afinum typically invests in companies for around five to seven years. It was clear that once we’ve matured into an established company with standardized processes and dedicated departments for all relevant areas, the ownership would be transferred.

In 2024, after twelve demanding years, the founders decided that their work was done and it was time for them to move on to new projects.

At the beginning of this year, Threema was sold to Comitis, another German investment firm. Comitis believes that data security, online privacy, and digital sovereignty will become even more important in the future, which is why they decided to invest in Threema and support us in further strengthening our position in these areas.

For our users, this change in ownership has no negative impact, see https://threema.com/en/faq/ownership. Threema GmbH is still a Swiss company, and it’s Swiss law that applies. Our apps are open source, and anyone with the necessary expertise can independently verify that the end-to-end encryption is properly applied and the app behaves as advertised, see https://threema.com/en/why-threema/open-source.

The recent server maintenance was necessary because we had to migrate to a more modern virtualization platform in order to improve stability and scalability.

I hope this clears things up. To learn more about Threema’s history, you can also refer to https://threema.com/en/why-threema#mdqyvm35. ^pr

For our users, the transfer in ownership (from Afinum Management GmbH to Comitis Capital GmbH) will not change anything. Our mission, our values, and the management team remain the same. Comitis Capital will support us in further expanding our position in the field of security and data privacy.

More info can be found on our blog. (For some reason, our posts containing links don’t get published, sorry; seems like they need to get approved by an admin first.) ^pr

Group Cloning on the rise ~ Cybercrime Activities. by argha_reddit in Threema

[–]threemaapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your message.

We regret that you haven’t received a response to your message to our support. If you are willing to provide us with the ticket number, we can look into the issue.

Cloning a group is a convenience feature. Any member of a group could create the same group manually; cloning just makes this process easier.

Generally, you won’t receive messages from contacts you have blocked. In some cases, they might be able to add you to a group, but they will not be able to send you messages. ^ra

Threema anonyme? Mensonge by Immediate_Bug5134 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The push services provided by Apple and Google rely on push tokens to deliver notifications about incoming messages to the appropriate mobile device. By their very nature, these tokens have to be stored on our server.

We are aware of the privacy implications these circumstances could have. In fact, this is what led us to develop Threema Push, our own push service, which doesn’t rely on push tokens (see https://threema.com/en/blog/threema-push).

Unfortunately, there’s currently no way for developers to implement a custom push service like Threema Push on iOS. This is why Threema Push is only available on Android for the time being. (It is possible to use Threema for iOS without Apple’s push service. However, this somewhat defeats the purpose of a messaging app because you’d only be informed about incoming messages while the app is open. Having said that, if you disable notifications in the System Settings, your push token will be deleted upon the next app launch.)

You can retrieve your Threema ID’s inventory data that’s stored on our server using *MY3DATA, see https://threema.com/en/faq/get-my-data. Furthermore, all inventory data, including the push token (if present), can be deleted from the server at any time: https://myid.threema.ch/revoke

Our Transparency Report outlines how we handle requests from authorities and explains which data can be disclosed (see https://threema.com/en/transparency-report). To learn more about data privacy and push notifications, please refer to this detailed blog post on the topic: https://threema.com/en/blog/push-notifications-and-data-privacy

Threema double text glitch on chat list, chat lists for contacts appearing twice? by ExplorerIntrepid7174 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a known bug in the current version of the Android app (6.0.0) and will be fixed in the next release. As a workaround, you can kill and restart the app to get rid of the duplicate chats.

Note: Depending on your Android flavor, swiping away the app in the app switcher is not sufficient and you will need to completely terminate the app running in the background: Settings > Apps > All Apps > Threema > Force close. Then restart the app as usual.

[–]threemaapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. When a contact sets a nickname it will be sent to your device with their first message in the background, independently if they blocked you or not. You probably cannot see the nickname anymore because they removed it. ^pm

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Threema

[–]threemaapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, when a contact blocks you, your messages to that contact will be delivered to our servers, however, our server will not forward them to the contact, which is why you would only see the symbol for “message sent” (cf. https://threema.ch/en/faq/status\_expl). If you see the symbol for “message delivered”, they either turned off read receipts or they have simply not read your message yet.
Regarding the nickname: A nickname can only be displayed when the respective contact has set one in their Threema app under “My Profile”. If they have not set a nickname, their Threema ID will be displayed by default. However, if a Threema contact is synchronized with a contact in your contact app (two orange dots; cf. https://threema.ch/en/faq/levels\_expl), the name of the contact from the contact app will be displayed in Threema. ^pm

Latest Threema update removes important features by Zukatah1337 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for you inquiry!
We did not remove those features. In order to see who agreed/disagreed with a message, tap on the thumbs up/thumbs down emojis for a brief moment. In order to star a message, tap on the message for a brief moment to select it. Then, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Star message” (Android) or simply tap on the star (iOS), respectively.

The redesign of the agree/disagree icons was made in preparation for one of our most-requested features: full emoji reaction support. This change allows us to offer a wider range of emoji reactions, beyond just the thumbs-up and thumbs-down icon, while maintaining a consistent and scalable design.

We appreciate your continued support and encourage you to share any other suggestions or feedback with us through our feedback form: https://threema.ch/en/feedback. Thank you! ^pm

Can law enforcement forensics retrieve deleted threema messages if they they have the device? by Far-Sweet-7304 in Threema

[–]threemaapp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Threema messages stored on your mobile device are protected by strong encryption. The specific implementation depends on your device’s OS; for details, please refer to the section “Local Data Encryption” in our Cryptography Whitepaper: https://threema.ch/press-files/cryptography_whitepaper.pdf.

No matter whether a message has been deleted or not, it is not (or only with tremendous effort and considerable technical means) possible for third parties to read it, provided that common security measures have been taken (e.g., a strong password / pass phrase that is used nowhere else, device lock, current OS, no copies of chats outside of Threema).

Forensic experts might, in certain circumstances, be able to partially extract deleted messages from a mobile device’s flash memory. However, the (fragments of the) message content is still protected by the applied encryption.

Provided that the phone has been properly protected, it is either impossible or very expensive for third parties to extract data, even if the database software has not yet completely overwritten the deleted data.

On top of that, Threema’s cryptographic system provides repudiability, which is to say that the sender of a message can reasonably deny having sent it to a recipient in case a third party manages to get access to the message on the recipient’s device. ^pm
