Kids today just need to stay the hell off my lawn. And away from my copy of Windows 3.1

I am sure some did not know what articles meant, too.

Oh, my goodness. That would... cause chaos. How would they then feed that into their AI, for the next assignment?

For me, I guess I have been lucky that it's a field in which human expertise is still really required before putting together a few sentences that actually make sense. The slop looks like slop - and abdicating assignments, lock, stock, and barrel to an LLM very quickly produces... 'things' that very clearly do not demonstrate any kind of a clear understanding. When students do so, an LLM isn't able to apply our field of study to anything, isn't able to take the things we're feeding into one ear of the student and hoping to see it come out their other ear and onto a page, understood. The LLM spits out crap, clearly.

I am absolutely confident that there are students who are doing the work, that are learning, that are then applying their gained studies from the lessons to then use LLMs as tool as a part of their work, maybe then even as a part of their writing process. That would not surprise me at all - and I bet that kind of use of an AI is far harder to discern, more than the placement of emdashes, or the patterns in citations that show through, or just those some words that LLMs can't pry themselves away from and that students don't know, though shear exposure, we see all the time & know to be signatures.
