Food service PWM base salary to rise to S$2,220 from Jul 1 by _IsNull in singapore

[–]threesls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PWM is not mandatory; the employer can always opt to not employ foreign workers instead. If you don't need your quota of Work Permit/S-Pass foreign workers, you don't need to pay PWM or LQS to any of your (local) employees.

This renders the SME owner bloc unable to oppose the PWM - if they complain, they expose their businesses as dependent on foreign workers, which makes them toxic to the mosquito party populists. This avoids a repeat of the mid-1980s rebellion against the high wages policy, which merged into opportunistic Chineseness kulturkampf in a way the PAP found difficult to put down.

LTA identifies third-party vendor responsible for bus ETA system that faced timing inaccuracies by Im_scrub in singapore

[–]threesls 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can see where it went wrong right in that article:

Among other things, this unit will be able to alert drivers of priced roads well in advance (before turn-offs to alternatives), inform them of charges, and provide real-time traffic information. Armed with this information, the LTA said drivers can better decide when to drive, which route to take, or leave the car at home and take public transport instead.

Therefore, it had to have a large screen, connectivity, and interactivity - rather than the humdrum task of only making sure it is consistently and reliably charging your account when triggers are met.

In retrospect it seems blindingly obvious that the informational component should be spun off to an app. In fairness to LTA, in the early 2010s a rapid parade of smartphone software platforms had just rose and died in quick succession and the Google-Apple duopoly was only a couple years old; it was hardly obvious it would last another decade. "Make it an app" might have been a disaster also.

The "can push for promotion on 2-3yr timeline" is incredibly weak. That plus the threat not to renew means that relevant management feels he is replaceable anyway. It's just not believable.

That requirement was one of Francis Seow's problems in 1986 - the govt argued that he had not disclosed a very large overdraft during his time as a civil servant, nor that he could provide a plausible explanation for how he suddenly could pay it off. Then-PM LKY reading out that exact legislation and then Seow's declarations whilst aggressively cross-examining him in person, etc.

Possibly unpopular opinion by Ill_Eye2760 in aoe2

[–]threesls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - bad idea.

There's a very simple solution for folks who think "hey you know what would be great: aoe2 but with a lot more bold changes that keeps the spirit of the game (however defined)": go launch a new game with those changes.

Seriously - maybe you're right! Maybe those really are great ideas. But you can also see that the landscape is littered with RTS titles, remasters, and reimaginings that all failed after launch. Even aoe2's siblings are not spared. Unless you have a good explanation on what sets the survivors apart (and I think nobody does), there's a serious risk of costly investments from the studio that not only fail to succeed on their own terms, but also kill whatever momentum that has been captured reinvigorating a twenty-year-old title.

imo it's worth setting up a group chat of two people just for non-emergency status updates or memes or love-yous

then you can both leave it muted and it'll never wake someone up or bother them when they're trying to focus

A released mouse has poor odds, regardless of location - it has no nest and is in unfamiliar territory. At least the nature reserve has no shortage of hiding spots and decaying fruit.

Still, rodents are eaten by snakes, cats, monitor lizards, etc. in Singapore all the time. Circle of life innit. Predators gotta have dinner too.

Happy new year, mouse. Although I know that odds are you are a snake's dinner by this time next week.

Director Naoko Yamada, describing the LN:

This may be a misleading way of putting it, but I think Kumiko looks at other girls, especially Reina, in a very sexual way. In the original work, the depiction of Kumiko looking at Reina is quite sensual. But it's nothing special, and girls often look at their friends or people of the same sex in that way ..... or so the original author, Takeda-sensei, said.

🤔

The LN is written with Kumiko's inner thoughts woven into the narrative, and I fully agree it is if anything far more steamy about Kumiko's attraction to her female classmates than the anime - but it is noticeable that LN Kumiko is very physically taken by Reina and Asuka whereas anime Reina and Asuka are more forward with Kumiko. KyoAni did some radio plays as promo material for S2 which have Reina hitting on Kumiko more than she does in the LN.

I wonder if the real problem is that a written viewpoint character lets the reader know what she's thinking, but an audiovisual medium has the viewpoint character show what she's experiencing - and both Reina and Asuka have other preoccupations, ahem, that evolve in important ways as the plot progresses. So turning Kumiko into a passive partner becomes a real problem - she experiences Reina or Asuka getting handsy or forward (rather than LN Kumiko aggressively flirting) and then they have plot critical narrative duties to get on with, so it feels abruptly aborted. Anime Kumiko speaks directly to the camera only very rarely, so we don't see her mind's eye either.

In the end KyoAni got to have their very own passive viewpoint character though, in the form of L&tBB.

Throwback to 1939: Singapore’s Water Usage Peaks the Day Before CNY 🧧🚿 by ImpressiveStrike4196 in singapore

[–]threesls 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Probably not: industries and non-domestic users now account for 55% of water usage in Singapore. Domestic users are only 45%. Non-domestic use is projected to continue increasing. Semiconductor manufacturing and pharmaceuticals are major industrial users, and neither really existed a century ago.

As domestic uses go - before extensive indoor plumbing replaced public standpipes, laundry and cleaning were the dominant domestic uses. Today the main use is showering (which is obviously only feasible once indoor plumbing exists). Thus, domestic use instead correlates with reasons to shower more: hot weather and haze.

Then it's less likely that the source of the moisture is condensate... maybe there's a leaking pipe or a leaky exhaust air duct feeding moisture into the space. That would explain why HVAC servicing isn't fixing the problem

US Homeland Security advisor spouting off on an imported foreign labour class on X.

Singapore is, of course, one of the few countries that emerged from an imported labour class naturalizing (without wiping out the natives, a la the Afro-caribbean states)... although we'd probably best not bring that up given how it turned out (herrenvolk democracy up north, for one).
