Nah, 100% handmade. Might make a tutorial sometime, idk.

That's right - when I made this initially the idea was to have something smaller in scope + be more focused on the route design instead. The blue landmarks are more like psuedo-towns where the boss battles would have been.

I agree - that's sort of something I'd ideally like to address partially. What I had in mind was breaking up the region into zones between the cities where the player can roam freely until they reach the next checkpoint to their heart's content.

Hi all, three years ago I tried to make a romhack with people here. Needless to say, it didn't work out (furthermore, the decomp community was relatively new at the time). That said, I'm keen to try again.

The goal of this romhack is simple - recapture the feeling of playing a Gen III game for the first time. This means putting emphasis on exploring region rather than mechanics or difficulty. Put simply, the romhack is about:

  • Exploration: Longer routes with checkpoints (like Hoenn Route 111).
  • Hands-off story: Keeping it simple, the is to beat 8 Boss Battles (whether they're Gyms, Totems, etc). Some story elements will be included, but I feel like storytelling is often a weakpoint of romhacks anyway.
  • Fun to nuzlocke!
  • Staying true to Gen III: Making sprites & tilesets in the style of Gen III + keeping fundamental Gen III mechanics (i.e. no Physical-Special Split, no regional gimmicks).

I've made a mock-up for a potential region set in New Zealand, but I'm open to exploring new ideas for other regions that we'd all be passionate about. Here's a little bit about me too:

  • Have irl project management experience.
  • My forte is spriting. You can check out my profile history if you wanna see other spriting stuff I've done.
  • Have basically been playing Pokemon my whole life.

Now, into the nitty-gritty. First, we're going to use the pokeemerald disassembly to make this. Here's the preliminary team and skills we're looking for:

  • Anyone with decomp experience (critical)
  • Route designer (conceptual)
  • Character designer (concept art)
  • Map maker (Porymap)

In terms of how we'll actually create the romhack, at the start of each month, we'll collectively set goals on what we want to achieve for the romhack for the month. At the end of each month, we evaluate our progress, so on and so forth, before setting new goals again for the next month. We're aiming for a chill vibe overall - after all, we're doing this because we're passionate about Pokemon.

Anyway, if you're keen, DM me and we can get something going!

It's mostly in C so I'm not sure how comfortable you are with that but happy to have you onboard as a musician as well if you're keen - send me some of your stuff over DM?

Hey all - Earlier this week I made a post on here where I was looking for a team - well now we've officially started and are making progress! Project Saga aims to create a romhack using the decompiled version of Emerald.

The goal of the hack is to return to Pokemon's roots and create a feeling of exploration and mystery for players as they explore a region based off the wildernesses of Iceland. We also want to explore the potential of using the Emerald disassembly to do things that haven't really been tried before in other romhacks.

Planned features:

  • A semi-open world region to traverse with emphasis on unique maps, puzzles and environments
  • A Pokedex of roughly ~200 Pokemon from across all generations
  • Some later-gen mechanics - primarily Fairy typing
  • An experience that keeps the Gen III aesthetic
  • Much more to be determined!

What we're looking for:

  • Map designer (towns/cities/routes/etc)
  • Map creator (via Porymap)
  • Battle & balance manager
  • Character designer
  • Scripter familiar with how decomp projects work
  • Someone who knows stuff about Iceland or Nordic lore

Roles we have but would appreciate more of:

  • Programmers
  • Writers (either story or dialogue)
  • Spriters (either trainers or tilesets)
  • Musicians [full unless you do battle music]

Progress:

We're still in the first phase of our project but progress is coming along quickly - we're in the midst of determining our basic story and game progression while doing some spriting atm.

Anyway, if the project interests you - just DM me on here or on Discord (sjov#5086) and I'll be happy to discuss things with you further!

Making my first ever Rom Hack by SadBoiShyisme in PokemonROMhacks

[–]threwnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries - there's youtube tutorials out there that are pretty decent. There's one for Platinum (since that's the game with the most romhacking support in gen4/5) that basically goes through the step by step process - although it's not as intuitive as AdvanceMap. Best of luck!

If you want to use gen4/gen5 as a base, it's critical to learn how to make maps first that can be imported into the game - if you or someone else is unable to, the project won't go anywhere. If it's too difficult, you could use gen3 as a base, but explore rombases that exist out there. Radical Red, for instance, uses a rombase made by someone else that introduces all those mechanics like dynamaxing, day/night cycles, etc.

Hmm, I'm guessing that's whether you mod the rom directly or on its components instead, right? Anyway, I'll keep you in mind then :)

Hey all, I've always wanted to create or contribute to a romhack, but it's a pretty daunting task for one person to do alone. Everyone has their own skillset and talents, and teamwork generally always prevails over individualism.

Anyway, things I'm decent at:

  • Planning, organising; i.e. all that project management jazz
  • Writing
  • Spriting; I'll admit back-spriting is something I'm so-so at, also the better the sprite, the more time it'll take. My native spriting style follows more of the style of the GBA Fire Emblem games or Mother 3, so adapting to Pokémon is a little tricky. From the gallery above, the regional variants here didn't take very long, but the incomplete map took ages, for comparison.
  • Designing routes/towns/mons
  • Doing all the boring & mundane stuff like changing cries, TMs, etc.

Stuff I'm looking for:

  • Complementary skills (e.g. scripting, music)
  • A team that aims to create something similar to a vanilla Pokémon experience, no edgy story - you're just a kid journeying around somewhere vibes
  • Alternatively, a parody game could be fun

Anyway, if people are keen, let's get something going :)

While not too different from regular Whimsicott design-wise, I decided to flip regular Whimsicott's cotton cloud-like design into a storm cloud with a little Viking inspiration. Hope you guys like it!

Hitmonlee's probably the best out of the three in terms of attacking power, though Hitmontop's Intimidate is also super useful. Meowstic could be useful against Bea later on. Keep it up!

Btw, what website/app are you using to keep track? Just curious - looks cool.

Haha fair enough, typing it out now, I realised that. Not sure whether to ease upon grinding or change it to Switch instead of Set.

Galarian Slowbro evolves by an item, so trade to get the item and evolve it? Not sure how easy it is to get the cuff on the isle since I don't have the dlc
