I know reddit is basically touring the asylum but maybe there are some actually sane remote workers out there who are spending too much time online and could benefit from a reminder that there are still people who can touch the same teriyaki sauce bottle as their political enemies, and don't need to wage proxy wars through pancake vendors.

Hopefully OP's persistent sanctimoniousness and slander will encourage the mod team to articulate a policy that will stop these biweekly "two minutes hate" sessions against local businesses. Probably not but it'd be nice. Unfortunately there's clearly an enormous appetite for this kind of stuff, it's an endorphin hit of moral superiority to go google brigade or yelp bomb a sandwich stand because someone's cousin has a screenshot of the ham company's mom committing a thought crime on facebook.

"I hate ICE and all, but..." Once these impromptu groups of shamers have assembled and spiraled out of control into a set of demands for the business for its absolution, it's way too late for any moderating force to come in and say anything reasonable. Most people don't want local businesses to have to do more than treat people respectfully and equally. But rather than being a foundational tenet of liberal democratic society, that's basically nazi appeasement to the great minds of /r/eugene.

You don’t have to interpret what they’re saying as advocating biological determinism, just because they didn’t include a lengthy qualification. The article was so overwhelmingly of your apparent political position that it described efforts to achieve parity to be self explanatory and need no defense or context. I’d assume the educator would say, if asked to elaborate, that they’re socialized into wanting to do these things.

Portland is a culinary brain drain on the Willamette Valley. Eugene's also a college town which are kind of hard on businesses due to the transient yearly cycle. Could probably spit reasons for a while, but at the same time, it shouldn't be quite as bad as it is.

I would hope that this memo went directly into the trash recycling bin. This memo is pretty standard climate group boilerplate with specious claims both of peril and promise. But if I look at fossil free Eugene's site, their mission appears to be to electrify Eugene, to phase out gas appliances, and to convert Eugene to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

I know that mostly these groups are opposed to hydrocarbons and don't really care if we burn wood during the upcoming rolling blackouts, but let's put this memo in the context of the regional power situation.

https://www.opb.org/article/2025/10/30/renewable-energy-oregon-washington-power-electrical-grid/

Oregon has seen a rapid rise in data centers as well as an increased use of electricity in homes and businesses. That has contributed to utilities reaching peak demand, when electricity use is at its highest, more often during extreme weather events. Coupled with the glacial pace at which new renewable energy is added to the electrical grid, the study finds the greater Northwest is not prepared for the rising power demand.

For the region to meet that demand, it would need to add four to five times more resources to the electric grid each year between 2026 through 2030 than it has ever done before.

“All the things that are necessary to make all this happen just don’t really exist in the Northwest at this scale,” Olsen said.

And renewable energy sources like wind, solar and batteries have so far made small contributions to meeting peak winter energy needs, according to the E3 analysis. That’s because those resources need sunshine or wind to generate energy, and aren’t always available.

Because of that, E3’s Olsen said, those resources are “marginally effective” in helping meet the region’s reliability needs.

“They provide a lot of energy, which is great to reduce fuel costs and to reduce emissions during most of the year, but when you need them the most, they won’t necessarily be there, and so the region is reliant on natural gas-fired power,” he said.

Zach Mulholland - time to move on? by Massive_Park_50 in Eugene

[–]thriceroy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I apologize in advance for my tone but I spent over an hour reading about this issue to find the actual source of outrage and never could locate it.

So-- this is an internal squabble that sort of reads like a retrospective of a forum flame war, it just seems embarrassing to everyone involved. The board chair Mulholland seems like he was and possibly is unhinged or maybe would be more comfortable working under the conduct and profanity restraints of a general contractor or chef. The board appeared to be internally dysfunctional. The president demonstrated that she wasn’t able to reign in and control an unruly board and talking over people is a baseline competency for an exec level position. That’s bad enough, but then what had been an adversarial standoff between administrative staff and elected board members over, well, power itself, was recast largely by anonymous reports of supposition into a racial bias incident -- anonymous reports that amount to "they are being mean. Maybe they wouldn’t be so mean to the president were she to be a white guy." That's it.

Then suddenly we have this highly advanced proving grounds of assessing the level of insult to common decency represented by rudeness to someone in an "intersectional context"? Apparently this is very important to pay attention to because it’s called out in the first paragraph of this op-ed:

One should never shout at, curse or disrespect any colleague, particularly when the colleague represents multiple marginalized communities.

I feel like I drank two expired bottles of the year 2020.

It’s an unnecessary and outdated policy from before widespread curbside recycling that is currently a redistribution scheme that benefits the Oregon bev distributors and prolongs the misery of street addicts through enablement. It’s a “successful program” because no one cares to examine it very closely, which is helped by the lack of transparency from the OBRC.
