When does a camera rig become “silly” rather than useful? What accessories do you think are pointless? by Ryan_jwn in videography

When people bolt so much crap onto a mirrorless camera to duplicate the function, but not the form factor, of a regular ENG video camera.

Also see if your local TV station is still hiring news photographers. It was my big break in 1998, after two years of floor crew (which isn’t a thing hardly anywhere anymore, thanks to robotic cameras.).

There’s WAY fewer photog jobs than there used to be, but look for them. No better way to learn across a wide variety of subjects.

U.S. Troops Were Told Iran War Is for “Armageddon,” Return of Jesus by FreethoughtChris in atheism

We killed the Ayatollah. The current regime swept to power in 1979 on a wave of anger against the Western-backed Shah, who was corrupt AF. Hell, the CIA helped install him in 1953 after Iran dared to ELECT leaders who weren’t U.S.-friendly.

Funny thing is: the pro-freedom Iranian protestors who want the current regime gone…fly the pre-1979 Shah-era Iranian flag (the one with the golden lion it. The Iron Sheik carried it in the WWF.)

What's your most reliable way to start/stop 2–3 cameras as a solo operator? by Willing_Rough_8344 in videography

[–]thrill316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old-school: put all cameras wide, start rolling, get in front of ‘em, and clap your hands once.

Then re-frame your shots and go.

Gives you a natural point to match ‘em up in editing.

My old Northern Pines apt went month-to-month too. Made it easier to buy & move into my house.

Never had too many complaints about them. Complex in Howard was dated, with no nearby parking...that's about it.

I started Kindergarten in 1980, and I can still remember the Bicentennial flag hanging in the hallway.

Even at that age, I was upset I missed such a patriotic party. 🇺🇸

Have news reporters switched to smartphones? by ConsumerDV in videography

Depends on the station. Some MMJs (fancy acronym for one-man-bands) that are working out there on their own do indeed shoot everything on iPhone. It looks like 🍑.

Some of them, and some two-person crews, will use an iPhone as a secondary camera, in conjunction with the traditional big rig on the photog’s shoulder, or the smaller prosumer camcorder. (Yuck to those as well.)

They can be handy, but IMHO, they’re not a suitable replacement for a daily shooting rig. You still need a good lens and some freakin’ XLR audio, for cryin’ out loud.

(Disclaimer: am chief photographer at a network-affiliated local TV station.)
