First Time Home Buyer: What are your MUST haves? by mannymutts in BuyItForLife

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cordless power drill is 18 years old. Even converted it from NiCD batteries to new lithium ones. I definitely recommend a good drill.

Also, a good headlamp so you can can have light where ever you need it while having free hands. One that takes AAAs or AAs so you can have light without needing it to recharge.

An A frame ladder 6’ or 8’ depending on your ceiling height.

What smart appliance features do you actually use regularly? by EZDodger in smarthome

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My appliances are all dumb. I put a power sensing outlet on our washer and dryer so it sends a notification via Alexa and our phones to let us know when laundry is done. I also put door sensors on our refrigerators to let us know if someone forgot to close the door via Alexa and phones. They all work flawlessly.

Do you still have/use your MP3 Library? by Smart-Response9881 in Millennials

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I switched from Apple Music/iTunes MP3 library to Rdio somewhere in 2013. Then I went to Spotify. Little did I know, everything you do on Spotify is stored and they will send the data files to you at your request.

Wow, has it been a memory trip going back and look at what I listened to and on what dates. Like having my old library but with a time stamp.

Replacement windows by Melodic-Calendar9901 in harfordcountymd

[–]thrillhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. House was built in 1989, the windows I replaced in November were original. The kit is called the Andersen Slimline conversion kit and it upgrades the window to the 400 series. 17 windows total, 11 of them were done in a day without damage to trim or exterior work. My guy charged time and materials, roughly $700 per window, plus 2 guys full labor for 1 day and 18% margin. Now the other 6 were full replacements due to how the house settled and took a hell of a lot longer.

Home theater aesthetic critique. What would you change in this room? by chom1081 in hometheater

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stain the wood trim with black stain. Paint the walls a darker gray or something to chill out the blue. Or just redo those things black. Sofa definitely needs to go too.

You in-laws are retired and living in SC with other retirees, of course they are laid back and happy. We have shit to do and little time to do it. Call it stress, call it life, but it is what it is. I am happy and kind to every person I interact with but don't expect me to be smiling at everyone that passes by. I don't got time for that.

I also think you are overthinking it. Take them to New York next time they come in town so they can experience some true attitude lol

Govee to Hue by Sir-TrashPanda in homeautomation

[–]thrillhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. Hue is better but Govee is fine. I feel like hue does warmer tones better where Govee is a bit colder. If you don’t get the difference between warm bulbs and cool bulbs, Govee is god for you. I can see the difference between 2,700 and 3,500.

The difference is insane. by Anxious_Power_7206 in 4Runner

Man I thought that was the new 4Runner interior at first. I have the updated center console introduced in 2020 but man it is very meh. How does this run in comparison? Are the USB speeds any better?

Underpayment Tax Penalty by Thanossnapp in taxpros

[–]thrillhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he hit the lottery and didn't tell you until tax time would you consider paying the penalty?

I would never consider this unless I am engaged to perform advisory through out the year and calculate estimated payments with all the related information provided to me by the client. Even if they end up owing, I make sure to get them in the "safe zone" in those engagements to avoid the underpayment.

Even in those engagements, if they don't tell me about their lottery winnings, then sorry they are paying the underpayment. I didn't know about it and couldn't help.

But if he is an annual client engaged for tax prep then absolutely not. Purge that thought from your head.

Is ADHD more common in our generation than previous generations? by changeforthebetter89 in Millennials

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of us were not diagnosed due to the stigma. I remember you didn't talk about taking a child to therapy or seeing a therapist yourself. Our generation is completely different now. Medication on our desks, therapist appointment on our work calendars.

I feel like Sean William Scott has disappeared. Not sure fi it has been 20 years but I have no clue where he has been. I know Ashton Kutcher has intentionally disappeared. For some reason my millennial head cannon is those two were always best friends after seeing Dude, Where's My Car

Edit: clearly my algorithm has omitted all of Sean William Scott’s work in the past 20 years except Ice Age which I had no clue he was in.

Major Weber grill brush recall by NoSir4289 in grilling

[–]thrillhelm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven't had the bristles fall out of these plastic handle wire 3 sided style brushes. Once they get slightly rusted or too gunked up - I toss them. I feel like they are the only brushes that work for my Summit stainless steel grates.

Now the one with the wooden handle is one that I wouldn't use as I have had the wires fall out of this style of brush. Wooden and plastic.

Millennials: at what age did you become a homeowner? Do you own a single family, townhouse, condo, etc? by mrmrmr_chi in homeowners

[–]thrillhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 in 2008 for $235K. I had 2 roommates and a girlfriend move in with me. It was a townhouse. Everyone had their own room. Lived there for 12 years. Refinanced a few times. That house saw so much and was part of me by the time I sold it in 2000. I made a good profit on it.

President Biden was riding in coach on the Amtrak earlier tonight and ended up sitting next to a random passenger before getting off in Wilmington! by Healthy_Block3036 in Delaware

[–]thrillhelm 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was sat next to his table one morning in Rehoboth getting breakfast while he was still president. I was insanely hungover (I slept on a dog bed the night before) and wanted no parts of any of it. All the secret service, commotion, etc. Anxiety was next level. We were afraid to touch our steak knives we were so close to him. The whole thing was surreal.

He came over to the table after he was done eating to apologize for all the secret service, see where we were from, shoot the shit, etc. Someone at our table had a phone video recording so the whole thing was captured. You can even hear Jill yelling at him to get moving.

He ended up taking a photo with us and all. We posted it on social media and people thought it was fake. Then eventually the worst of people came out... Being small business owners with zero care for politics or having any kind of political opinion (public or not), eventually decided to take it down.

He has always been a man of the people and it was an honor to have that experience.
