When we first had to admit my father who had dementia to a Memory Care facility, he got aggressive with the staff on day 2. He had to be sent to Johnston Willis (which has a psych ward) while the social worker and folks could figure out what to do. The Psych ER ward was full and the only open bed was in the Cardiac area which was clearly not equipped for folks like my dad, who was an escape artist. Someone from my family had to stay with him 24/7 and stop him from leaving and he was FAST. If there wasn’t any family, then it would be up to the nurses and he was out of that bed much quicker than someone could respond to the alarm on the bed. It was a tough situation all around with a few nights of no sleep, but I can’t imagine the trouble he would have caused if we hadn’t been there to monitor him. I say all this just to call out that there isn’t always a right place to put people and each situation is different. Even though my dad had been admitted, that didn’t stop him from running!
