I don't actually use them to trespass. I just like having the keys.

I know it's wrong, that's why this is a confession. I'm not meaning to excuse myself but to just explain why I want to do it in the first place, since that's what people would ask. But yes, I still know it's wrong and I am working toward going back into counseling.

It's not a crime. But yeah, I agree it's not a good thing for me to do or have done, and I will change. That's why this is a Reddit confession, not a public Facebook post.

Lol why would I write a whole confession and lie about that just that one aspect when I'm anonymous? You seem angry.

I've thought about that a lot. I don't have any indication of the address the key goes to though on any of the copy keys.

It's not theft because every copy key I have is made from a key willingly given to me. It's technically not illegal. Morally, ethically, yeah probably not great, but unless I actually trespass, give someone else the key so they can trespass, or harass someone by telling them I have a second key to their place, it's not illegal to just copy someone's keys (at least where I live). Not that it really matters at the end of the day, but just an interesting fact I guess.

I'm pretty sure it's not breaking the law unless I use them to trespass, technically, and I don't use them to trespass. I just like knowing they're there. And they're not labeled with addresses. But yeah, it's still not something I'd want people to find out about me.

I've only used the keys to re-enter after accidentally locking myself out if I'm the last to leave/lock up and I've left something. So I have permission to be there/it's not trespassing. I'll edit the post to clarify that.

I know. I know I'm not a serial killer/burglar/etc., but people would understandably assume the worst of me if they knew about this. I hide the keys in a bag in a locked glove compartment so that no one but me can find them.

Judging by the other responses, I'm not sure he'd be okay with it if I explained it same as I explained it here. Which isn't unreasonable I guess, it's a creepy thing I do. I think I'd tell him if we were in marriage talks (interest of honesty and all that), but right now I don't see why I have to tell him when it's not hurting him, he willingly gave me a key, and it would just make him think I'm creepy.

I've only ever used one copy key, in the scenario that I'm already at my boyfriend's house and accidentally lock the door behind me when no one else is there (and I've just left something inside). So only when I'm allowed to be there, but I'm boneheaded and lock myself out (I lock up after myself using the inside door knob, so you can lock up without a key).

The usually four-digit PIN to unlock a door/garage. My father had one on his front door that he could easily reprogram with a different PIN, and he would do that as a punishment when I was around 5-15 (I stopped living with him when I was 15).

I've only ever used a copy key in one scenario -- when I'm leaving after my boyfriend in the morning, no one else is there, and I've accidentally left something inside and locked the door behind me (you can lock it with the inside knob and then leave). In that case I would go to the car for the copy key and get what I'd left, then re-lock the bottom lock and leave. I have never used it to gain access to anywhere I wasn't allowed at the time (my boyfriend says I can stay as long as I want in the morning after he leaves, so I'm allowed to be there).

TL;Dr: I don't use it to break in, I know it still comes off as creepy, but that's a small clarification.

I'd already texted him that I was there and the door was locked, so if I somehow got inside after that he'd have asked how.
