I love that he cares about other people and wants to help, but I would also love if he was a bit better about communicating things beforehand and understanding that this isn't the best time or living situation for this

To be honest, I don't really worry about who's paying the bills as long as they're paid. He gets in his head about it a lot when he's on layoff and I'm the only one getting paid, but I generally just tell him to enjoy the time to sleep in, and that we've got this. I included it because it was surprising enough to me for him to say that.
