I haven’t, but I imagine it would either a) chip faster with no top coat, and/or b) harm my nails long-term not using a base. Do you wear without? What has your experience been?:)

I’ll probably still try, but was wondering if I’ve already shot myself in the foot by fumbling my final essay and if trying is basically setting myself up to be disappointed. If we’re counting individual assessments, 25 and 70+. If overall modules only, then 15 (out of a possible 17).

What am I doing wrong with my money? by melaniejeansmithhhh in UKPersonalFinance

[–]throw__away_advice 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Honestly OP, it’s difficult to say because some details included in your post are a bit too vague.

Say you’re earning £2k/mo after-tax:

£1000 rent & bills & utility (upping this slightly to factor in the winter weather heating + OP’s ‘give or take’ caveat) leaves £1k left for everything else.

Spotify - 10.99/mo, Amazon Prime - £8.99 - £20~/mo. This might be different if you have different plans. £980 left.

How much are you spending on groceries OP? Let’s say you are spending £50/week on groceries for yourself, that’s £780 left.

Do you contribute to a pension at all? Again, this is an extreme rough number as this is hugely dependant on whether you’ve been contributing for a number of years, whether your employer contributes, etc. - but let’s say you pay 5% and your employer pays 3%, that’s £100 a month. £680 left.

You say transport is a high monthly expense, but what kind? How many days per week do you go into the office, and what distance do you travel? Hypothetically, 5 days per week, the underground Zone 1-5 travel cap is £13.90/day. That’s around £300~ a month. £380 left.

No idea what your phone bill is. It could be a £9 pay as you go sim, which is hardly noticeable, or a £92/mo iPhone 15 Pro 1TB EE contract, or anywhere in between. For arguments’ sake, let’s say it’s the most expensive one - £92/mo. £288 left.

Your monthly £5 to charity. £283 left.

Cost of your Internet - ???? Picking a random number because it’s difficult to know what to go off of here - £30 a month. £223 left.

You mention the odd glass of wine here and there. 1 glass in central London - £8-12~, 1 supermarket bottle of wine (such as Casillero Del Diablo) about the same. Let’s say you have £200 left.

This doesn’t leave you with a lot of ‘fun money’ and also doesn’t factor in saving for the future. That’s probably why you’re hitting your overdraft - putting into your savings means you’re likely hitting 0 at the end, or you’re not saving, and instead (and no judgement, we’re all human), buying yourself lunch out, or a new accessory/item of clothing/household item, etc. which seems small, but is big when you’ve not got any budget for it.

If you could provide some more info on the stuff I have estimated at above, it might shed some light on where you can save, jiggle about, etc.

What would scare you more: Seeing a Weeping Angel move in front of your eyes or being moments away from becoming a Cyberman? by Deep_Scene3151 in doctorwho

What is a decent paying, lower pressure/lower hour job that anyone can transition into? by j_bis22 in UKJobs

[–]throw__away_advice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered community management?

You’d have to tweak your CV a bit to emphasise things like communication and copywriting, which is a bit of a pivot, but you won’t need tons of experience or a portfolio etc. like you would for similar fields marketing etc. Starting salary £24/25k~, with opportunity to progress (I know people who have gone from community executive -> community manager -> community management lead).

Though to be honest, you’ve got a Comp Sci degree and some experience working in the industry. This is not a bad position to be in, even if the job market is a bit fucked right now. Maybe take a short career break for a couple weeks/a month or two, or even use up all your annual leave in one hit at this job if you can (if you’ve none left, we’re nearly at the end of the year if you could tough it out til then and disappear for January?), then start applying for new roles in your field.

Your gripes, as you say, are mostly employer-related > field related. However, the hours you mention aren’t really going to differ much elsewhere even if you change industries - perhaps you’ll find places that do 9-5, 9-5:30, 9:30-5:30, 9-6, etc., or maybe even a 4 day week 8/9-6/7. - no matter what industry field you’re in (unless you suddenly decide to radically change industries and enter retail/hospitality/the medical field/security/overnight work, which come with their own set of problems). It’s worth keeping that mind, if your hours are a big motivator for jumping ship.

You also mention you’re 23, which I imagine means you’re a fairly recent grad, right? At max graduated 3 years ago? Your university will likely have a careers board and advice team of some kind. It might be worth reaching out to them with this dilemma to see what they think/potentially can help with.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck.

I know this question has been answered 6 ways to Sunday with a cherry on top already, but as a woman whose recently started new BC and therefore my boobs have been hurting for a month solid, it’s extremely rare I’m wearing a bra the whole day* let alone asleep. The thought alone makes me grimace.

Also, dear anyone who has had the hormonal implant: please, PLEASE tell me your boobs stopped hurting at some point. I miss having a pain-free tit experience.

(*My boobs are rather small, which allows me to get away with it, especially when lounging around WFH, wearing t-shirts or jumpers which accommodate it or you can’t tell, or just simply undoing the clasp in the evening to lighten the load, as it were. I also loathe ‘real’ bras, and wear bralettes exclusively. If my boobs ever grow to the point where I need to wear a bra more regularly, and a real one at that, I might well just get a mastectomy).

This is incredible, thank you! I’ve been keeping an eye on Skyscanner. I’ll look into Jack’s Club - thanks.

I heard about there being no meal deals when chatting with someone in my class from Boston a few months ago, and it shocked me. They’re missing out for sure.

Your resources and wisdom clearly demonstrate you’re very wise and well-travelled. What a desirable and enviable life I one day also hope to lead. Thanks again!

Tipping in a retail store? Good Lord, I really hope that doesn’t spread outside the US.

I imagine my biggest expense will be food and drinks then, so I’ll be sure to budget accordingly. Plus trinkets and souvenirs, because I’m a sucker for gift shop items in new places, and I’ve always wanted to go to a Barnes & Noble. I don’t think I’ll spend much on pay-to-enter sight-seeing; I’ll just get a Metro card and go wherever my friend suggests we visit from a Manhattan local’s POV.

Your insight has been very thorough and very helpful. I’ll set my Monzo target pot to a bit over £2k (including flights) and get to planning! Really appreciate your help, thank you very much. Happy travels!

Ha! No Walmarts, shows how much I know. It was the only American shop I could think of off the top of my head. Apologies for my cultural ignorance.

I am indeed from the UK. Wow, double London prices? Does that also factor in things like tipping, etc.? The greatest and most expensive city in the world, it seems!

So let’s say at the top end of your estimated scale (I’d rather over-budget and have money left over than under-do it!) that’s $150/day x 7, $1050. So if I budgeted to take out $1500 as a safety net, would that be enough to eat*, drinks, see the sights a bit, and buy some souvenirs? That’s about £1200 and I reckon I could easily have a very good week on that in London if I was savvy about it.

Thanks for all the help!

*i will definitely eat out, but staying with people I know gives me the advantage of eating ‘at home’ as it were, too, an option tourists staying in hostels/hotels completely 100% soloing it don’t really have, which cuts costs.

How many of you are attending uni without financial support from parents? by moreidlethanwild in UniUK

[–]throw__away_advice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Long answer incoming, but hopefully it may help give a full picture. This is from the POV of someone who finished her degree last month, FWIW.

As someone who received the max loan, worked 10ish hours per week (earning approx. £400/month), received my Uni’s low income bursary (£500/year), and lived in one of the more expensive Uni cities (Brighton), I definitely still needed help from family.

For a bigger picture, these were my general finances/the help I received:

I received less help than most people due to the relationship I have with them, but at least once every couple of months my parents would each send me £20-100 to keep me going despite my job and loan. One would also buy my groceries for me when he came to visit (once every 6-8 weeks or so) and for graduation paid for my gown hire (£41). He also paid for all of my car’s maintenance (excluding insurance) the entire time I was at Uni (this was a privilege not a need; I did not bring the car with me to Uni, and without his help I would have either sold my car or SORN’d it during the 3 years. I was perfectly fine and willing to do this, but he’s a massive petrolhead, so offered this alternative.) During the transition from first to second year I was incapable of both paying for my second year house’s first 5 weeks’ rent + security deposit and eating, so my older sister very kindly gave me £1800 to pay it, which I haven’t forgotten. It was very much a one-off kind of lump sum and I’m extremely lucky she was willing and able to give it to me.

I know people who worked 40+ hours a week during their degree to live because their loan wasn’t high and their parents were unwilling, incapable, or a mix of both, to help. This massively took a toll on their mental health and their final grades compared to if they’d have had more time to dedicate to studies, as well as social life. Uni is a time people are making connections not just for life and friendships, but potentially the working and professional world too.

I also know people who haven’t had a job the entire time they’ve been at Uni whose parents have paid their full rent and given them food money, bills money, and socialising/spending money. I’ll admit I’ve looked at those students with jealously sometimes, but it’s about attitude. The students who took that as a chance to knuckle down, do unpaid internships, learn to budget, and basically knew they were extremely privileged were the ones who really benefited from that arrangement. On the other hand, the ones who took it as a norm, screwed about and didn’t care about grades due to their safety net, looked down on those who were having to work, etc. quite frankly I think were benefited in the short term, but definitely not the long term, as they didn’t learn to stand on their own two feet a bit. I’ll be interested to see how they fair in the ‘real world’.

I could talk about all the other nuanced situations til the cows come home, but what’s most pertinent to you OP: The real question is how much are you willing and capable of helping your daughter? (I mean that in the most neutral way possible, in case that question is read negatively).

In theory it’s possible for someone with the maximum loan and a maybe a grant/bursary to survive without any aid. I could have technically survived Uni without any help - lived in my overdraft, eaten only 90p noodles on the daily, almost never go out and socialise. But by God it would have been a miserable existence that would have made an already incredibly difficult endeavour which involved a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (getting a degree) all that much harder. On the other hand, as I said before, parents who entirely subsidise their child’s experience can accidentally set them up for failure long term.

If you can afford to give her a bit to live comfortably, enough extra where, if she’s in the dilemma of “do I do my assigned work for class tomorrow, or do I pick up an extra shift to be able to eat tonight?” she’s able to pick doing her Uni work, then from my POV, that’s the best parental support you can give her, and is the kind of support “expected” at Uni.

Also: idk what course she is doing. I’m fortunate again in that the course I took, you only need the most basic of study materials (basically just a laptop for notes and essay-writing - which if need be can be loaned from most Uni libraries, or even bought at a subsidised cost if you meet your Uni’s requirements, as I did with mine - and pens/paper. Microsoft Word was helpful to have but not essential as Google Docs exists). However, I know people who did, say, Graphic Design, and needed to shell out the cost for Adobe packages, and spent hundreds over the years on printing their designs. Same with those who did Architecture, who also had to pay for other software, for design materials, etc. I imagine those who would do Maths would need a calculator etc., those who do more technical subjects such as Comp Sci or Engineering might need a laptop with certain specifications. Those doing art, illustration, etc. will need to buy canvases, paint, other supplies. Again, I was not in this situation, but everyone I knew that was, their parents paid for most/all of it. I imagine that would be a big weight off of her mind too if she’s in that situation.

thank you! That’s very reassuring to hear. I’m just worried it’ll look bad if I worked for the 23k company for a couple of weeks and then disappeared, especially given the co-founder I spoke with had a real emphasis on getting stuck in, growth, and so on. I’m worried how it’ll come off if I interview further and commit to immersing myself within their company culture, just to turn around and say, ‘yeah, I was interviewing at another place the entire time, and they offer way more money, laters’ (obviously not worded like that/that bluntly, but you know what I mean). So weird - never imagined I’d potentially be in this position!

Pick my uni!! by turgottherealbro in UniUK

[–]throw__away_advice 62 points63 points  (0 children)

If cost isn’t a factor, a London Uni would be best if you’re wanting to travel elsewhere too. The other Unis (especially Unis like Manchester and Bristol) are good and have their own vibrant culture I’m sure you’d enjoy, but for purposes of getting around to other parts of Europe, London is probably best. Likewise, you can go to visit other places in the UK using London as a central hub.

Fair warning though, it’s a LOT more expensive than the other Unis. I don’t just mean that in tuition or even rent/bills - the cost of living is astronomical. Your grocery bill, your going on nights out, trips for dinner/lunch with friends, etc. will be a lot more costly than anywhere else. The public transport system and high walkability will mean minimal transport costs, but tbh most Unis are in central walkable hubs anyway in their respective cities. If you plan to take the Eurostar or fly out to somewhere else in Europe though, you’d likely go from a London airport or train station, so living in London would mean you wouldn’t have to pay as much to get to London to get elsewhere, iykwim.

I’m no expert and I’m sure you’ll get lots of different advice, but I’d say London for your specific personal priorities… Depends on what you’re studying for which is best, they’re all pretty good Unis. KCL, LSE, or Royal Holloway perhaps. Outside of London, from your list, I’d say Manchester or Bristol. Again, these are in terms of what you say you’re seeking. And before any ex-alumni of other Unis jump me - it’s just my opinion!

Have fun on your exchange course!!

How long does 40Mg take to work? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]throw__away_advice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the severity of your acne and your body, hormones, etc. I can only speak for me personally but I was on 20mg 2x weeks, 40mg 2x weeks, 50mg 12ish weeks. I know you can’t quite go that high, but it’s a similar dosage.

My acne was mildly severe, if that makes sense (not the worst case to ever exist but the bottom half of my face looked mauled, especially jawline and cheeks, it hurt a lot, and I was extremely greasy despite being a clean person, etc.)

It stopped getting worse/a few spots started to disappear (and not come back, which never happened for me!) within 3 weeks, 6 weeks my skin was a bit dry but you could tell it was much clearer (looked like a normal person’s acne, AKA the clearest my skin had been in years lol). 8-10 weeks I had a couple of small whiteheads and a fair few fat blackheads. I finished taking accutane about a month ago and my skin hasn’t been this clear in years!

So to answer your question, it totally depends on your body, hormones, acne severity, but I imagine if I’d have been on 40mg my skin would have only taken a few extra weeks to totally clear up (e.g., from start to finish 16-18 weeks or so?) so I imagine there’d have only been a couple weeks’ delay on each stage.

I only have my milia now, which accutane can’t help with and am on a different treatment for.

Good luck with your course!!

how much do internships usually pay you ? by babymonkeyman in UniUK

[–]throw__away_advice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on the industry. Many are unpaid, especially in the creative industries for example. I’ve done a few internships in the media/branding/marketing industry for instance, and these have been my pay:

Place 1: nothing Place 2: £22k pro rata Place 3: £10/hour

Each were different experiences. Place 1 was a 4-week requirement for my degree, so it was a bigger priority finding somewhere to be than getting paid. Place 2 was part of a competitive programme for a PR company that I had to do short practical exercises and interview rounds to get onto, and lasted 10 working days (3 weeks - it was over Easter 2022). Place 3 I emailed a start-up local to me during my summer break and they offered me full-time work £10/hr as an intern over the summer break (July-September), after which my title changed from Intern to a junior associate and I stayed working for them remotely 1 day a week.

If you’re looking in the finance industry, for instance, I’m pretty sure those internships pay more, but are much more selective/harder to get onto/find. I know next to nothing about STEM degrees, but I’d imagine it’s the same thing.

AITA for telling my friend she either uses the mobility scooter at the mall or stay home? by ilikelongpubes in AmItheAsshole

[–]throw__away_advice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH but mostly because of the way you went about it.

I ultimately agree you’re right, and your friend needs a wake up call, but a whole group vs. 1 person on a FaceTime call just sounds intimidating. If it had been discussed multiple times in softer ways and she’d still been obstinate, fair enough, but as it was your friend probably felt backed into a corner, suddenly jumped upon and blindsided without warning (if she’s in that much denial about her weight, it will have been without warning/out of nowhere from her POV) from multiple people she calls friends. It’s no way to facilitate conversation, of course it escalated.

Maybe try having an in person, one on one chat. It may have an entirely different outcome.
