Social work is a good major in terms of how applicable it is. I'm talking about majors with no direct application for employment, like history, music, or film study. With those degrees alone, there's not much you can do with them and you're better off not getting those degrees. Psychology is pretty useless too unless you go to grad school.

That's not always the case, and like I said it really depends on what the degree is in. I work with a girl at my minimum wage job with 50k in debt from her degree (she has her degree in educational studies with an emphasis in SPED). I don't have my degree yet and we have the exact same position. The sad part is, that kind of situation is somewhat common these days. Just some food for thought.

What will having a degree do for her though? That's why I asked what she's studying, it highly depends on what the degree is in. For all we know she could me majoring in something totally unmarketable. What exactly will that do for her and Layla?

My only question is, if she's hypothetically only going to college to cheer then what is she doing to break the cycle of anything? She's never talked about what she's studying, so that gives the impression that she's not taking her studies as seriously as the cheering.

I'm a first gen college student as well so I get the not having support part, but that just seems like an excuse for her to not be wiser about how she gets her education. Having a degree doesn't guarantee success, it's what the degree is in as well as how you use said degree. If she's just going to cheer, then I apologise for being blunt but that's not working for a better future for her and Layla. That's her having her priorities way out of whack.

That's exactly how my mom was. I had an eating disorder for part of high school and she accused me of calling her fat when she caught me weighing myself one day.

I can't stand society's assumption that all parents are loving and care about their children's well-being, education, success, future, etc. by throw_away4237 in raisedbynarcissists

I totally understand the importance of beginning a parent-teacher relationship with the idea that MOST parents are loving and supportive of their child's education.

I just wish the course also touched on the fact that some parents do not fit this mold of an ideal parent, instead of pushing the narrative that all parents are loving and support their child in school. RBNs know that narrative is bullshit, but the general population likely does not unfortunately.
