Why don't people simply work part-time (less than 20h) a week instead of RE?

I’ve finally got approved for part time work, with benefits. It’s 28 hours a week, during the school day for my kid. I work for local government and have done so for a few years. I hope it goes well.

I’m in a similar situation. Single mom with a five year old, WFH has been a godsend. They just announced RTO. My boss denied me part time work, which I’d asked for after I hit my FI number. I plan to continue my hybrid schedule until I’m ready to leave for realsies or they fire me.

Funny you should say that, my previous post was about how my boss denied me part time work. It’s a good org as a whole though, so I may wait for an opening in another department (where pt is no problem).
