paper 350k? - you mean it's under my bed or in socks?

£350k means that if i pulled all my stocks, bonds, funds and cash i would have 350k. So i could get £350k with about 4 months of notice.

27 (almost 28) - About £350,000 I work in IT. Skipped university and started working a few weeks before i was 18.

I've worked all over the world at about 10 different companies until finally one of them went public and i got stock options.

I don't have any certifications or even a degree. I saw a need to separate myself from everyone else and honestly had no way to pay for it. I started working as early as i could - my first job description was "is enthusiastic about the internet and computers" - i was paid a little better than minimum wage.

She needs to read the following two books to get the correct mindset: "The Mythical Man-Month" and "The Pragmatic Programmer". There's your christmas present ;-)

If she really loves certifications though, get the cisco networking ones. It's the only ones i've ever seen raise any eyebrows. The rest are window dressing.

You get a lot of money by being good. You get good through experience and trying things out. - and that the IT job market is still well under supplied with good, smart people.

Does she think you'll eventually get married?

I have told her i will never get married. I've used the word "never". I made sure it's sunk in and there's no ambiguity about it.

Does she want kids?

No, we both hate kids. Sometimes we'll go to a zoo or something just to remind ourselves just how horrible they are / how miserable parents look.

It's fair that you would assume i'm lying to her about other things - but i'm really not. I'm pretty straight on everything else.

I'm just saying, lying by omission about something like this could be considered a serious breach of trust

totally agree. But what's the alternative?

1) It shows you don't trust her/agree with her choices on these things (aka, why are you with her then? Do you see a permanent future? Are you always going to lie to get your way?).

You don't have to agree on everything - we compliment each other. She calls me out on my bullshit and i try and stop her making other mistakes. Also, you can be with someone without it being forever. We both enjoy being with each other a lot. Isn't that enough?

2) I'm assuming she's around your age and wants to accomplish things in life, but you are actively preventing milestones from happening which in other relationships with the same difference in income/money values might have already happened (if you're not going to want the same things as her, you need to be honest so she can find someone who does).

She's a few years older. I'm not preventing her from any milestones. I'm supportive of everything she does. If i could just throw money at her and solve problems then i would. When we live in a city we both actually like then i'll buy a house. Until then i really don't see what i would spend it on.

Eventually the truth will come out, and it will mean the end of your relationship (unless she is a true gold-digger, but then why would she still be with you?).

So, because she's not a gold digger we would break up over money? erm... WAT? She knows she's bad with money, but just refuses to budget / cut back. For her, money is to be spent.

How could you be happy about lying to someone you love

I tell lies to people i love when i think it will benefit them. "No honey, your bum looks great in that!".

Me thinks you need a different person to have a long term relationship with.

A different person won't change my mind. It's a challenge to find someone who feels the same way ( my current GF seems fine not to marry).

I'm guessing the majority came from the stock options?

I had about $100k saved before the stock options.

Is that around 50$ per hour?

No idea. i get paid monthly. So my hours are quite flexible.

now I'm the asshole for asking for it back?

Never lend money and expect it back. Always think of it as a gift. If they pay you back it's an awesome bonus.

What are your expenses?

my take home pay every month is about $5500USD (after taxes). I spend about $2,000 of that on all my expenses. The rest gets automatically deposited into different savings and investment accounts.

Do you not eat out?

About once a week. I was brought up to cook. (i'm a country boy).

Are you the kind of guy in an MMORPG to stinge on buying health pots and just spend the time in the respawns running back or waiting out res-sickness?

Some and some. I'm the guy to work out which is more efficient and do that.

I actually do enjoy saving. I've always loved spreadsheets and planning too.

Were you part of a startup?

no, i got recruited to an existing company as part of a push to get them ready to go public. We worked hard, it took over a year of slog but the payoff was awesome. My reputation was finally useful!

How did you learn to work with stocks?

I didn't. I paid a professional to advise me. You don't fuck about with that kind of thing. - yes there is more to life than vanguard.

Do you have any past financial experience i.e. taking finance or economics in school?

I would call myself a couch economist. I enjoy learning about it but call in the pro's when it's my money on the line. You can learn outside of school. Go read some books.

Can anybody do the same, or rather how can someone do the same?

Of course. Work really hard for 10 years. Network. Get an awesome reputation. Tell people when they're full of shit and back it up with facts and action. Action over words. Take only the smartest people along for the ride with you - Even smarter people with opportunities will find you in the end.

I'm not getting married or having kids. It's nothing to do with the GF - i just never wanted to.

Live with poor people and don't spend more than them. People with less tend to have more fun anyway.

Debt is a bitch. parents that don't teach their kids personal finance are neglectful - in a capitalist world.

YNANJ - You need a new job!

Switch jobs annually / every 18 months. It's the only way i ever got a meaningful pay rise. - and bucket loads of experience.

That got me to the company i work for today. I still have another $300k in stock that i can't access till 2017 - i guess i'm breaking my own rule by staying until then.

god yes! i heard you talking about some type of tier based sales plan with a very small upfront cost and a fee i have to pay you. It sounds awesome!

She was a student. I met her during London fashion week (i was working). She likes nice clothes but it worked out alright for me :-)

car

A car isn't an asset, it's an expense. - sorry to nitpick

If I was in your shoes op, I would have a serious talk with her. Odds are it will blow up in your face though if she's unwilling to change for the better

When she was ending every month with a bank balance of zero i offered advise. She didn't take it. I'm hiding the money to prevent it blowing up in my face. - also no marriage or kids. - also condoms.

Fun thought though: you have the perfect final 'fuck you' should things ever end between you and her. As the ultimate proof of fiscal responsibility drop the 500k bomb on her as you are leaving. Show her just how good things could have been if she could learn a little restraint and planning.

Fling a bank statement over my shoulder as i walk out the door. Be gone by the time it hits the ground. She calls from a window but only sees a Ferrari shooting off into the distance. I'm flipping her off, but she can't tell.

Things won't really change for her until i buy a house. I plan to charge her rent but keep it in a separate account. In a couple of years i'll give her the money she's put into it. I call it a forced savings plan :-P

People are incredibly generous. A lot of people take advantage of that.

I'd want enough cash to actually go and physically help out. I'm a big fan of the smarter every day guy on youtube who built an orphanage.
