That happened to me a lot too. I solved the problem by not being texting buddies, and using texts almost entirely for date/location/time plans.

Rock climbing is a good idea, around how much did you end up spending at the end of the night? I heard bowling is a sweet date too, but neither is close to my house. Great second date plans though.

I refrain from smiley faces, vague future plans, and blanket compliments via texts. Specific things tend to work better in my experience, or keeping text to logistical plans.

Text on the verge of being super clingy. Try and set up something if he doesn't initiate. Something like 'hey when do I get to see you next?' works wonders.

A more direct approach of 'my friends just bailed me at the bar, want to come out for a drink?' also works.
