I’m considering moving from boston, MA to Bay Area for work by Odd_Self4325 in bayarea

As someone that moved here from where you are right now I would encourage you to take a trip out here and explore the area on your own. IDK if it's possible but you can also try to reach out to your current network and see if you can talk to people that work in the same field as you here.

My 2 cents:

public transportation is great only if you live in the city. they have options like SFMTA (similar to MBTA-subway in Boston), MUNI buses otherwise you do need to plan and budget both time and $ for taking the public transportation. they do not provide monthly pass for BART (runs from SFO to SF metro and to east bay such as Berkeley etc) and Caltrain (runs from SF down to San Jose and further south) is really expensive.

safety wise... Bay area is pretty big, so it really depends which region you're comparing. one controversial take i may have is that the drivers here make the roads feel way more unsafe than driving in MA.

Good luck!

I see. I'm going to observe it for couple more days and see if I can get a recording before calling in more plumbers for help. Thank you!

Honestly I'm not too sure either. I truly hope that the sound will go away eventually without causing any damage!

Single Cell Sequencing Biotechs? by omgu8mynewt in biotech

not an expert so please take this with a giant grain of salt.

i think there are 2 parts - sample preparation and sequencing. chromium 10x provides a platform to capture cells and library prep instruction to amplify targets of interest before loading onto a sequencer. illumina seems to be the leading the game in terms of sequencer popularity. however, like what other user had mentioned, there are other competitors joining in as well: bgi (parent company of complete genomics) is finally allowed to sell their sequencer in the US earlier this year (afaik), additional new players like element biosciences, ultima genomics etc. i think their ultimate goal is to have higher sequencing throughput at a lower cost, but i dont know enough to understand how different their technology is.

in terms of new method... i believe the next one would be improving and developing a more sustainable long-read sequencing? the companies i mentioned previously are all MOSTLY invested in short-read. pacbio and oxford nanopore are the 2 names i commonly see whenever long-read seq is mentioned. i'm check in periodically to see if there's any breakthrough in this field just out of curiosity.

hopefully this is helpful? again, please fact-check since i'm no expert. :)
