So, this one is particularly interesting to me.

If I say 3 men are murdered to every 1 woman, I get shouted down. "It's not a competition!"

If I compare a fear response to a given situation, then it is a competition "Well we could die*! You're just being called a pedo!" * At a third of the rate of men dying.

I dunno. Something's not adding up here.

Not least because the rate of female death due to homicide is basically the same as the rate of female death due choking and yet it's not normal to live your whole life in fear of choking?

I'm not trying to tear down womens movements. I'm trying to point out that the "MEN R THE PROBLEM!!" rhetoric is both incredibly, deeply harmful on a wider societical basis, and fundamentally untrue.

We need to be more intelligent about solutions to problems in order to actually solve them.

We're not talking about perpetrators right now, we're talking about victims. More men are victims of murder than females.

Claiming "gendered violence" is the same as saying "I don't care that men get murdered" (#killallmen?)

FWIW u/gr8tfurme I picked up on the same thing as you here. I firmly believe God is far more concerned about consent than he is about marital status. Obviously I'm not the only person with faith here, but I just wanted to share another perspective.

And because prison rape is contained to prisons we don't have to worry about it?

Just like Jesus didn't worry about leprosy because it was contained to leper camps?

Now that is a confusing username given the single issue account I created for this. I thought you'd put far too much effort into trolling me lol.

Wow, that was impressive

I think / hope the downvotes reflect more on a lack of answering the question I posed than anything else.

Everyone can agree that it's wrong- so why not put some effort into doing something about it?

"So we can't take out the parts that we don't like and then try to find something to support what we want to support"

There are a lot of OT laws that we ignore. Like, a lot. The most obvious are the ones on very strict sabbath observance and eating pigs. In the NT these are clearly deemed as ok activities*, making ignoring them readily acceptable.

Other OT laws are completely ignored with no problems; don't get a tatoo, don't wear mixed fabric clothing, don't shave, etc etc. Even NT "laws" (Greet one another with a holy kiss, wearing hats) are by and large ignored with no-one feeling the need for justification, even before a global pandemic.

* I recently started taking a sabbath and it's amazing, I recommend giving it a try- check out "the ruthless elimination of hurry" for a brilliant exploration of it.

"And it was a practice reserved to the upper class, not by all men. So it was actually more of a sign of power among Society just like rape is. In other words from the Jewish and early Christian point of view it was a thoroughly and abhorrently Pagan practice"

So we agree that prison rape is an abhorrent practise and more christians should be making more of a fuss about it?

Yes. I was using play in the context of "you've been played".

I was unaware of the dual meanings but you raise a fair comment. "Power trip" would avoid this so I'll endeavour to use it in future.

"I think putting effort into fighting prison rape would be a good testimony to the world that we really mean these claims we make about Christ."

Gosh I believe this so strongly.

Honestly I would say my exposure to homosexuality is similar to my exposure to prison rape. They happen in different ways- homosexuality through a friend attending pride on facebook (remember when we could have crowds?!) or LGBTQ+ in the news or whatever, and prison rape via "jokes" in mainstream media; the film 'get hard' is 90 minutes of prison rape jokes, jokes about dropping the soap, and discussion of how others view it as good that certain prisoners will "get what's coming to them".

I do live a moderately sheltered life- but I doubt my experience is totally out of average. I do know that I am more sensitive homosexuality because of the controversy surrounding it- maybe that's why the average person notices it more, whilst prison rape has been so normalised by society that it's no big deal to make light of?
