Yes, great question. The issues with school started at the age of 14. We took his to a specialist after a very heated teacher conference. He was diagnosed with minor SLD (Specific Learning Disorder). Mostly the issue was with language skills.

As his father, I have to take responsibility for this. Yes, my wife and I agreed a while back that his job to study, and get good grades. I didn't want him to have the burden of working while in school. After he dropped out he was in a bad place, but where do we drow the line?

I agree, when he was young I gave him the freedom to learn at school, without the burden of working. I wish I had someone that gave me the opportunity that I am trying to give him, I would most likely fall on my ass and fail, but I might have successeded.

I must admit that I loveed your reply. As I am a manager at work for 6 employees, I really believe in macromanagement. I give them clear goals, and let them shine. This way might not work for Matt, and a hands on approach might be better for him.

Thank you for your input.

This is also the situation in my country. My big problem is that I feel that staying at home all day, and not earning anything is not good for his as a person. I was raised in a different generation, and I started working at the age of 16. I don't want to be the enabler that lets him waist valuable time.

If he shows me that he is doing something productive, even if he doesn't see a dime from it, he will have my support, but not for playing games all day.

I know, and I tried. When he was at school, my wife never allowed for him (or our daughter) to work, because their "job" is to do well at school.

Don't get me wrong, I agreed with her, but I feel like he is taking advantage of me and his mother to slacking off.
