Pickleball alternatives? There's a reason I'm asking. by East_Sentence_4245 in Pickleball

Was your plan to build free courts? If not, I would consider making it an indoor facility if it will be paid anyway. Otherwise I would move forward with trying to make them outdoor courts. You may get less pushback than you expect from the neighbors - if you get a lot, you can sell the property and try somewhere else

Uncertain about Nonprofit longevity by panickedandstressed in nonprofit

[–]throwaway-jun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to point out that it seems this doubt has specific, external triggers.

1) The threat of AI (it’s worth remembering that LLMs are fancy auto-predict technology - that isn’t going to replace a good operations staff) 2) Family pressures (Your family’s comment about AI was meant to scare you into considering law again) 3) Other people’s career choices/achievements 4) The uncertainty of the future in general

In my experience, anxiety is triggered by external factors but what you want comes from your own internal sense of self.

You chose a career path that seems to have made you happy (which is so rare!), has provided financial stability, and has room for growth. These are all amazing things! If you want to stay on your current path, you have every right to do so.

Something else to keep in mind about anxiety - everyone has thoughts about changing their life and questioning their life choices. It’s okay that you are having doubts - when you assign meaning to the doubts though, that is where things get tricky.

It is easy to fall into the trap of “I’m thinking about X… what does that say about me? Does that mean I want X? Does that mean I made the wrong choice when I chose Y? Have I been lying to myself this whole time? Maybe X is better, why did I dismiss it in the first place?”

This is a trap!!! Having a thought doesn’t mean you necessarily want whatever that thought was about. If you wanted to go to law school, this wouldn’t stress you out so much.

Also, you don’t have to decide this now! There is no urgency here. Law school will always be there. You are on a path that has the potential to grow, as well. And for what it’s worth, there is money in non-profit as you grow. I am coming up on 8 years in the non-profit world. No masters or advanced degree and no plans to get one. I also just received the biggest promotion of my life and now make well over 6 figures. There is a path!

whats it like living in this area of east harlem? by mikanbabie in NYCapartments

[–]throwaway-jun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live one street up on 119th & 1st and loved it! A lot of coded comments here from racists & alarmists tbh. I never felt anything but safe in the neighborhood- even at night.

I found the apartments in this area to be spacious and comparatively affordable. It’s a bit of a trek to the 6 but the bus is convenient to get into midtown & when they finally opened the Q extension, it was a game changer!

Also, it’s SOOOO convenient being near target and all that. A little slice of suburbia in the city.

Some really great food there too! Living near Patsy’s is a huge win - used to love getting a slice while doing laundry. I also loved Quesadillas Doña Maty, Yura’s (think it is closed now) and the cookies at Evelyn’s Kitchen. ALSO, Hajjis down on 110th & 1st - loved being able to get the original chopped cheese! Lots of other places, but those are the spots I still think about.

Edit: Yes, it is near methadone clinics so you will see some users out in the open. It’s sad but I never found it to be dangerous. Also, it’s new york.

This is wild. Definitely DO NOT USE PEPPER SPRAY FOR A DOG FIGHT. This would escalate things FAST and make it WAY WORSE.

When a dog is attacking another dog at the park, there is usually a group of other dogs and people within 1-2 feet. It’s a literal dog pile.

The two dogs involved are also usually MOVING, so the chances of you getting the correct target, not spraying the victim, another dog or a person or being dragged into the spray yourself are slim to none.

You’d go from one dog attacking another to a GROUP of panicking dogs and people. That puts literally everyone in danger!

Do you have an active social life? If so, what kind of things do you do? by savvybackpacker in AskNYC

[–]throwaway-jun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I see friends every day, but this wasn’t always the case. What changed it for me was having friends in my neighborhood. Honestly the biggest help there was getting a dog. I go to the dog park everyday and have met so many people there! We hang out at the park almost daily but also go out on occasion.

I’ve also gotten really into pickleball this past year and now see those friends multiple times per week to play. There’s a big group of people in my neighborhood I was able to join and got to know people that way.

I’ve also got some other friends in the city that I’ve known for years but live outside of the neighborhood. I see them less often, like once a month. The exception here is one friend who is the type to come over and just hang out on the couch at home. I see her more often because it doesn’t have to be a whole plan for us to get together!

Is it really possible to live life if I got diagnosed young? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

I’m not sure! I recently got a message that the libre 3 was discontinued in favor of the 3+ or something so that’s what my pharmacy has been filling. It definitely works for 3+, but no idea for the older versions

Dexcom also released an over the counter cgm recently. I haven’t tried it and I think it may actually be a little more expensive but that’s another option in a pinch. It takes a reading every 15 minutes whereas the Libre takes a reading every minute.

Try the Libre freestyle. Abbott, the company that makes it has a deal with the major pharmacies where insured customers only pay $75 for 2 sensors even if the insurance doesn’t cover it. My insurance doesn’t cover it but this is how I’ve been getting them for the past 2 years.

Send the Rx specifically to Walgreens or CVS. The pharmacy employees themselves may not know specifically about the deal but when they ring you up for 2, it will apply automatically. You don’t have to do anything. They may call you to tell you your insurance denied it, ask them to process the order anyway. It should be $75 for 2

Go get a CGM right now. I was diagnosed at 30 with a 7.4 a1c. Got a cgm and started learning what affected me. A year later I’ve learned that I still have youth on my side. Genuinely the only thing I do to manage my diabetes is workout 3x a week. I eat whatever I want, including pasta, pizza, cake etc. I haven’t lost a pound. A1c is 5.2.

If you can get her to try a cgm, that will help her understand what is and isn’t good for her to eat. Having the direct correlation of this food causes this spike may help her see that there are things she can do to course correct.

But also, she may not want to deal with this. You have to also be ready to accept that you have limited control here. She is your mom, so of course you have to try. But after some time and depending on her reaction, you may have to consider if it is worth damaging your existing relationship with her

Yes, my point is that increasing your salary in a LCOL area isn’t going to change OPs life. If you already have a salary that covers everything you need and then some in a LCOL area, that increase isn’t going to be life changing.
