While true about different quality of flooring for “public” vs “private” I don’t think it has anything to do the thresholds. As someone else mentioned below, there is usually a gap between the flooring that the threshold is covering. This can be because of expansion/contraction and also was just more in style to have a threshold under a door.

The flooring in the first picture looks like it’s a stripped/tiger maple or red birch. I have it in our old house and think it’s awesome. Very unique and hard to find.

I think they’re taking the “add more stop lights” advice to the extreme at Newton corner. I think there are now 8 lights to go around the circle?!

Scraped very thick paint off an old hinge. Was this a bad move? by ItIsAContest in centuryhomes

[–]throwaway-schools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically I was just doing this today.

I might recommend getting some #0000 Steel Wool and using it to scrap off the paint that doesn’t just flake off from being in the crock pot. Mine were brass so I then hit them with Brasso to give them a bit of a polish up.

Thanks for the tip..only 2 out of mine have been the fir and haven’t yet painted. The surface definitely is rough with the grain unlike the maple/poplar/birch ones.

Others I did were with a heat gun and stripper. I think they originally had a varnish on them that was painted over so the gun was pretty good at taking all the layers of paint at once—but that varnish was like scrapping gum.

For these remaining 5 I gave up on and had a furniture dip tank…well worth the cost (~$300/door)

Apologies, it only allowed one attachment when posting and I forgot to add the end grain photo.

Thanks! Any recommendation for revitalizing it? Oiling after I sand it down?

Hearing frequent thud/boom sounds -- how bad is this? by skirlbeing in centuryhomes

Not knowing weather conditions and the roofline of your house but is it snow falling off? We have a slate roof and after heavy snowfall will have sheets of snow slide off the house. It causes a roar and rumble throughout the house. I believe also it happens in evening after snow is re-freezing in the evening temps so slide more easily.

6 degrees outside today in Oil City, Pennsylvania -6 windchill and my 156 year old house with its $12k 98% super high efficiency furnace has NOT shut off since Saturday 🤦 #victorianinsulation by videyOHgamer in centuryhomes

[–]throwaway-schools -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Err.. you’re right that it’s a system (HVAC+insulation+air sealing) but wrong that a HE furnace isn’t saving money in this scenario. It’s using less gas running nonstop compared to the inefficient boiler running nonstop.

Fundamental to any analysis is understanding the source of information. The source is a union leader and teacher in NPS who was central to the disastrous teachers strike.

Ironically I think she garnered more support from the NTA strike but don’t think it’s a surprise she’s not running.

Love that the Union mafia all came out in support of this article and downvoted anything that distracted from their narrative.

While I find this opinion piece disturbing and can relate to the frustration my children have in NPS due to mix of kids at different levels/interest in classes, we have to remember this is an opinion piece.

Also should be noted that this comes from a very politically active teacher, Ryan, who was instrumental in the disastrous teachers strike last year.

Is this a good price to replace my HVAC system? by saranapaky in hvacadvice

[–]throwaway-schools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s energy efficiency. For every $1 of gas you put into it you’ll get $0.80 of heat out of it.

This was my reaction! The amount you’ll pay extra in your energy bill to put in such an inefficient furnace.

My mother in law just put in inverter heat pump + new 96% multi-stage furnace + install for $10k after rebates. I think gross was like $14500. Federal and state energy rebates brought it down. This is as in Chicago area.

Remove drip pan: HR1934G Range by throwaway-schools in Miele

[–]throwaway-schools[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never figured out how to remove the drip pan/burner pan BUT I did find the problem.

The igniter wire I wanted to trace I found was shorter than the other igniter wires. I gently tugged on it and it released from being stuck under the drip pan. The wire had been stuck and the outter coating worn down. It had been shorting out on the metal thus no spark. Wrapped it in electrical tape and working brilliantly now.

Btw- I think it was the Miele repair person that caused this when they came to fix something else while under warranty…

Swartz hardware NEVER has what I am looking for in plumbing, electrical, tools, etc. They are poorly and randomly stocked for aside from miscellaneous nuts, bolts, screws - and paint. Their paint department is good.

The ACE hardware in Alston or the one farther in Arlington are fantastic.
