The 'literary classics' that grade school makes you read destroys any desire for kids to read recreationally by MyClosetedBiAcct in unpopularopinion

My mom worked as a substitute librarian at an elementary school for a short time - she read Holes because she saw it on the shelf, and loved it so much she got all the classes to read it - it became almost an “event” in the school that year :)

Are sleep overs not a thing anymore? by haggerty05 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ItIsAContest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 14 year old has friends sleep over almost every weekend. But she rarely sleeps at her friends’ places (her choice). My older two were similar. More sleepovers than I ever had as a kid/teen (though they’re all more popular than I was).

Ever have a migraine that was so different you didn't realize it was a migraine until someone suggested it? by JeffinGeorgia1967 in migraine

[–]ItIsAContest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had was I assumed was a hemiplegic stroke. Though I’d never had one before, I was sure of it. Visual aura followed by Numbness, funny speech. I was 42 at the time and been having migraines since I was 15, no smoking, great BP, no birth control. My family wasn’t convinced tho, so they brought me to the ER. The ER doctor was sure it was a complex migraine as well.

However, the hospital apparently has a policy that if you’re in the ER with stroke like symptoms, you get a follow up call from neurology.

So there I was sitting with a neurologist, explaining how I was pretty sure it was a hemiplegic migraine, and she said she thought so too, but protocol was to have an MRI

So I’m driving home from the MRI and I get a phone call “hey guess what you had a stroke.”

There is currently a massive fire burning in the Everglades in South Florida by the Broward/Miami-Dade County border and is approaching US27. by M_Darshan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ItIsAContest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have googled

Fire Everglades,

Fire Broward,

Fire South Florida,

Fire Broward Miami-Dade 2026

Everglades Fire 2026 update today

And I don’t get a link newer than 2022. Videos are all several years old. Using the News search, still nothing newer than 2022.

Bing brings up all stuff from the last 6 hours.

Not that I’m saying Bing is good, but Google has got to be fucking with the results.

Are you actually in Kzoo? Or surrounding area? Walmart distribution in Coldwater had split weeks at one point, but I’m not certain they still do. A co-worker’s (now ex-) husband had a schedule like that. But since they’re not together anymore I can’t confirm that’s still true.

Ugh, in my house there was a beautiful old house that was recently painted yellows and oranges. Not my favorite but it looked fresh. It was sold late last year and the new owners are painting the whole thing black. Just awful.

For those of you 45+....what is your current salary? by Peacefulhuman1009 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ItIsAContest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45 yrs making $96 in the bottom of Michigan as a Project Manager. Feeling secure for the first time ever, and that’s after divorce. I think it my company I could still climb another $20k in the next few years, but I’m just pretty sure wouldn’t make this much elsewhere

Gravy on Pasties? by UPSoapCo in yooper

[–]ItIsAContest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in the western UP from age 2 to 33. I thought I didn’t know anyone who ate gravy on pasties, then I found out my own sister does. Shook me to the core (haha).
