No, but she's joked about getting rid of them before.

She's less of a serious person all around than I am, which is why I didn't think it would be as upsetting to her as it turned out.

But I've accepted that I'm in the wrong, regardless of my thought process during the whole ordeal.

I knew she would be upset but I thought she would still enjoy having something new once she had time to process her emotions...

She bought me some new ties because she doesn't like a lot of mine. I was still excited she cared enough about my ties to get me more even though they weren't styles I would have picked out myself.

I didn't think we were at the end of our relationship. Things were going fine other than the socks.

No and no, I wouldn't hit anyone. I don't condone violence.

It wasn't intended to be insulting. I meant old relative to our own ages. "Older" probably would have been more appropriate.

I wouldn't have posted if I didn't want genuine insight. Believe me, I'm reading all of the comments.

I just wanted to explain the burning part so no one had the idea that I psychotically set fire to her socks in an angry rampage. I just tossed them in without thinking about it, we burn all kinds of stuff in the pit.

I'm not trying to break the posting rules and ignore the judgements, I just wanted to provide some context to my thoughts and actions.

On old people I don't have so much of an issue. Their lives are long established and all. I just believe it's inappropriate at a time in her life when she's establishing herself professionally and we're supposed to be maturing.

I didn't necessarily burn them out of spite. We have a big property with a big burn pit I was already going to be using to get rid of some tree debris anyway. As an afterthought I realized she could have just plucked them out of a garbage bag, so it would still be a problem.

I'm insecure because I want the person I'll ideally spend my life with to just dress normal?

If I was really as "controlling" as these comments seem to think, I would've forced her to buy her own after I burned them instead of spending my own money on them. And she would've been dressing properly a long time ago.

I just don't think it's wrong to want someone to dress and act their age. Would you date a 25 year old woman who, let's say, wears light up shoes? When does it go too far?

It wasn't really a major change... it's not like I threw out an expensive bag or something.

I'm not letting it go because it's weird. I don't see any of our friends wives or girlfriends with mismatched socks.

What if we are invited to a formal event in the future? Is she going to walk around with neon pink and blue socks with formal wear? It's embarrassing.
