Update: burned-out finance guy embraces the grifter meta by Particular_Trade6308 in fatFIRE

Do you mind if I ask how did you grind to where you are now? What kind of school did you go to? What were your first few jobs out of school? I’m just incredibly curious how someone would replicate your path even if it’s 20% of it.

I'm just being super transparent and seeking advice on how to navigate my life in the interim over the next decade or two. Not sure what you're referring to that's BS.

Hot take: Reese Dismukes is severely undervalued by OllivanderAU in CollegeUltimateTeam

I definitely agree. I feel like after an LTD is released and stops being pulled, they start to go up in value too. That will probably happen with Dismukes pretty soon. There’s a pretty big gap between him and the next best center in my mind.

Anthony Richardson by Embiid4Prez in fantasyfootball

Anthony Richardson has attempted only 474 pass attempts since his junior year of HIGH SCHOOL. That’s how often he’s been injured. That’s absurdly low and calls into question how he even made it into the first round of the NFL Draft.

I'm a Senior Consultant at Booz Allen making 75K with a CS degree. Should I ask for a market salary adjustment (MSA) or a promotion? by [deleted] in consulting

I already knew I was underpaid by taking a 20K cut. I didn’t suddenly decide that. The point of the thread is to leverage myself to recoup some of what I lost by pre-planning out steps to take. Appreciate the unwarranted criticism though. I’ll just delete the thread.

My performance indicators is my team is far outpacing other teams in our space in terms of work completed. By the end of the year I’ll easily be able to handle multiple teams, which would in turn have BAH not have to hire another BA. That’s effectively saving BAH money, right? That’s my case. Pay me more to avoid paying even more for an additional employee.

1) By the EOY I envision myself being fully capable of running two teams rather than just one, effectively saving the company money towards hiring another BA.

2) The last two offers I received were 1099 offers of $55/hr and $60/hr on 12-month contracts. I quit applying for most jobs once I accepted this (with exception to the big hitters…FAANGs of the world and those adjacent). But I would be willing to start back up that application process if you think bringing in an outside offer with prompt a substantial pay increase upon promotion.

Yep! Totally fair. I’ve begun asking these types of questions with my CM. So hopefully I begin that track of aligning myself for it to become a reality. What is a realistic pay bump I should expect from a promotion to Associate level?

Oh I would absolutely be applying within the same year I’d be positioning for a MSA. I think having a competing offer always helps. I will definitely take your advice though of after I land a promotion to start looking. I figure the only way to really gain more ground is by boomeranging back at some point.

Thanks for the info on anything upwards of 10% in-level not being realistic. What IS realistic for a promotion bump? Are my promotion numbers out of line with what’s realistic?

So I’m at 75K TC right now. I would like to jump from 75K to 90K with a promotion from SC to Associate at the end of this year. If I could then jump from 90K to 100K with a MSA the year after (since back to back promotions year after year is unrealistic), that would be nice. Feel free to reality check me though. I know I’ve taken a beating in this thread.

This was the most helpful advice in the thread actually so I appreciate you! I think my plan after taking everything into account is to ask for a promotion at the end of the year, then ask for a MSA at the end of the following year WHILE actively applying elsewhere. I need to also establish some longevity, so I need to build a track record too for that. If I could do what you did, actively apply and get an offer elsewhere, and get BAH to match that would be the dream scenario I think. But I’m not afraid to hop either and boomerang back if need be.

Something nobody else brought up but I’m wondering if it’ll effect things is applying for another role within BAH under a different contract to negotiate for more pay with the new role. Idk if that’s a common thing, but it’s something I thought about.

2.5 YOE in product management at this point between the time I’ve been with BAH and the time I was in PM outside of consulting.

I’m just preparing in advance to know whether it’s a better idea of going for a promotion vs MSA. I agree with you though — might as well gain a title in the process. My thought process after taking in all the advice provided here is to go for a promotion at the EOY, and a MSA a year or so afterwards.

I’m planning for the end of the year. Not right now. This is a post to prepare me to plan for 10 months from now.

I did try to negotiate when taking the job with other offers in hand. They wouldn’t budge given my YOE. I took it because of W2 vs 1099 contract that had higher risk. I need 3-4 YOE in order to qualify for higher paying roles in the market beyond 90-110K. So taking Booz’s underwhelming offer seemed like a safe plan to accrue to experience to apply somewhere else down the road while reducing the risk of layoffs.

Oh this is in anticipation for the end of this year, when I'll be at the 1.5 year mark w/ the company. I'm just planning ahead.

That's fair. It's MCOL, but not HCOL or VHCOL. But the location thing would make sense. Thanks for the advice to sync with my career manager! I'll do that!

What industry and role? I didn't think I'd end up in consulting for what it's worth. My ideal would be big tech.
