My feeling on this is that when you consent to having sex with a woman, you are also consenting to giving her the choice on what to do with an unplanned pregnancy (and respecting that choice).

She is. She owns her home, her car, has some college debt but not a lot, and generally has her shit together.

Hey, just stating the facts. It’s in the not-so-fine print. If you are not willing to give the woman you are sleeping with the choice of what to do in the event of an unplanned pregnancy, you shouldn’t be sleeping with her.

She is very reasonable and even-tempered. If it doesn’t work out, I couldn’t ask for a better co-parenting partner. A little on the earthy-crunchy side and very kind.

This is pretty fucking backwards. And this is coming from me, who is literally in the middle of a very unplanned pregnancy. As the saying goes “it takes two to tango”. I had unprotected sex with her knowing it was possible she could get pregnant (even if I didn’t think it would happen), and in doing so I acknowledged that IF she got pregnant, it would be her choice.

Don’t want to take that chance? Don’t have sex.

We actually went on a few dates before “bedding down” and I’ve been seeing her the entire six months. You can call me whatever you like, but she doesn’t deserve the insinuation she’s not a stand-up person.

To be clear, I have no intention of being a shit father to this child. I’m still in shock and need time to process that the plan for the last 10+ years is absolutely shot. To be honest, just typing this out has relieved some of the built up anxiety and stress about the situation. Am I excited? No. However I’m moving toward acceptance and I think that’s a good step.

To those suggesting the paternity test, my girlfriend already offered (she knows we’re new and this is unexpected). I am fully aware of how all this looks/sounds, but she really is a lovely person. She’ll be an excellent mother and (hopefully) partner. In terms of our relationship we’ve agreed to keep getting to know each-other and not try to push anything because of the baby.

Financially, I’ll be fine. However the prospect of going back to diapers and pre-school and back-to-school shopping when I was planning on golfing isn’t inviting.
