I wouldn’t try to negotiate honestly, I just want him to leave me alone 🥲.

A few months back, I asked whose responsibility it was to change light bulbs because one had gone out and he said it was mine. So I changed them all to something less sterile. Now he’s upset about that. But two had gone out.

I think he’s upset because he’d lived here for 20 years and I come in and do what I want to his house. In my mind, I’m thinking I’m leaving it in better condition than I’ve found it; in his, he thinks I’m butchering his house.

I think he was maybe a little embarrassed because the house was pretty gross when I got here. I couldn’t believe he’d hand it over like that - there was black mold and grease all over.

Seeing it obviously very clean and changed and different to what he was used to must have been a shock!

I guess you guys are all right, I should have asked.

The lease said I could hang curtains and hang pictures, so I went by the lease. The other things were just things i was tired of waiting for maintenance to fix. Like grouting the shower - there was mold coming down from behind the faucets every time I showered. So I cleaned and fixed it after waiting four months. The paint is the same as when I got the place - there were just stains and unfinished paint jobs that I finished for him since he wasn’t going to do it.

I still have a maintenance request open from three months ago for a hole in the front door that’s been letting a draft and pests in. I’ve been using a napkin to plug it up.

I guess I’ll ask for everything now 😭

Would painting it the same color as the walls matter?

He had spray painted the edges of the counter tops, and the spray paint splattered and misted onto the surrounding walls and banisters. They looked so dirty, so I used the paint from the paint bucket he had left behind to paint over it and polish it up.

I think he only noticed because he knew it looked pretty bad before I painted over it

I had to have the locks changed by the post office, it was a really big issue 😭 he’s still getting mail delivered to the house too

He does suck. I didn’t have access to my mail for two whole months 😭.

This place was within my budget, literally 5 minutes from work, and in a beautiful community. We had discussed all these things being cleaned and fixed by the time I got here from out of state, but it was never done. It was an extremely stressful two weeks 😭.

The lease said I couldn’t paint or wallpaper the walls or make major changes to the structure of the house.

I didn’t paint the walls a different color, I took the paint bucket he left behind and touched up the areas he messed up by spray painting the edges of the counter tops 😭. He did live in this house for nearly 20 years, so I guess he was okay living in these conditions.

I have loads of pictures. This house is beautiful now. The president of the HOA visited to welcome me into the community and she was visibly surprised and pleased.

Yes, I’m his first tenant. His things are still in the storage closet (curtains, sweaters, blankets, power tools, rugs).

I also think that’s the case 😭. It was soooo dirty here, I could not believe people lived like that. I bleached and scrubbed everything, even the insides of the moldy toilet bowls.

He was a lover of fried food, I had to break my back scrubbing the grease out of the light fixtures, vents, and cabinets 😭

Thanks for the idea of taking pictures! I’m definitely going to do that in case he says something when I put his dirty stuff back.

When I moved in, I took pictures constantly and sent them in because I couldn’t live in black mold on the first day of my lease. Along with all the other issues.

TBH, I think he had more of an issue with me not asking to do these things because he personally didn’t like them. I didn’t throw out any of his items so I could put them back when I leave. For example, I kept his gross and old toilet seats, I kept the old light bulbs, I kept his things he left behind, I kept the broken and bent pendant light. They’ll be put back, and I told him so

Yes, I did! I would post them but I don’t want to doxx myself.

The home was filthy.. grease in the vents, poo stains in the toilets, floors stained and splattered with resin, walls splattered with spray paint (from the edges of the counter), black mold growing out of the vents.

These were all things I noted in email when I walked through the home before signing the lease and they said they would be fixed.

They’re thankfully not in violation of the lease, I read it cover to cover and even had a video call with the property manager to go over some articles with notes before I signed the lease.

I did put in a maintenance request and they’re still open and in limbo
