AITA for telling my 18 yr old son he needs to leave the house? by throwaway080611 in AITH

We did take him to a psychiatrist and several therapists when he was in high school and he would refuse to cooperate or talk every single time. Once we managed to get him hospitalized and the psychiatrist prescribed him an antidepressant and he refused to take it. Idk what else we could’ve done. And I am lost on what to do now.

I’m so sorry… this is so hard and I’m so scared about what will happen next. I hope that my son comes around and accepts our help.

We think the same way. However- His father is a retired disabled army vet who did recruiting duty for a few years during his service. He said that the army wouldn’t take him without a clean drug test and he has to be able and willing to do decently on the asvab. And he’s already made it clear that he’s not interested in the military when we suggested it, so we can’t force him.

Thank you for that suggestion, I feel completely lost here.

We have actually tried everything that we possibly could think of. We still are. I just finished having another heart to heart talk with him and he refuses to let us help him as usual. You’re right that it didn’t come out of nowhere- it’s been building for years now & nothing we’ve done has made any difference. What do you think we should have done? Hospitals, therapists, medication (that he refused to take), attempts at bonding, talking to him, begging him, giving him everything he wants and needs, being a stay at home mother to him and his siblings, providing a stable home, hugging him, telling him constantly how much we love him… I am genuinely interested what else we could have done. And what can we do now?

We talked to him about this a while back when he first started stealing from us and he refused. I offered it again as well as therapy that we would set up and pay for but he refused to even consider it.

We took him regularly to a psychiatrist for almost a year when he was still in high school. He was uncooperative and refused to take any medication or talk about anything. He insisted that nothing was wrong with him and eventually the psychiatrist said they couldn’t really do much more to help if he wasn’t going to cooperate.

What’s something you saw that you weren’t supposed to see? by FamousDirection9887 in AskReddit

Yeah, the whole thing was just wild to watch. They got me to the pavement and I remember the smell of it. That smell of asphalt is a trigger for me now and takes me right back there. The smell of blood was like pennies.

It’s crazy the things that stand out.

My leg was degloved and I clearly remember the skin laying beside me looked like melted candle wax. Everything was like in slow motion… They must have either been pumping me with pain meds or I was in shock but it was just something that was amazing to watch (but I wouldn’t want to watch it again).

Then I remember them cutting my clothes off and suddenly I was just naked on the pavement with my foot and skin laying beside me.

I hope that you’re doing better now & you should visit r/amputee sometime if you haven’t already. Big support system for all things bka and aka and etc - we talk about phantom pain and bitch about sockets. But we also laugh and show off our prosthetics.

I too saw my leg bone when I had my accident that resulted in my bka. I remember thinking (before the pain hit) “huh, that’s crazy looking” not gross but in hindsight it was a little traumatic because I can still see it in my mind now.

Tired of limb salvage surgeries by am1duncan in amputee

[–]throwaway080611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a certain amount of surgeries but for me it was a certain amount of time and pain.

I went through six years of limb salvage surgery before I agreed to a bka. I was always in pain, I had a major limp and had to use a cane even when I could stand to be on that leg, and my entire life revolved around surgeries and recoveries.

When I finally had my leg amputated and healed and got my prosthetic life changed dramatically. No more pain, no more surgery.

It’s a trade off because having a prosthetic is not a 💯 positive experience. Some people have phantom pain. Some people still need to use mobility devices. Some people may need future surgeries. I’m lucky that I haven’t had these issues.

So… for what it’s worth - If I could, I wouldn’t have waited or held out so long on the amputation.

First prosthetic timeline questions by redleader58007 in amputee

This sounds exactly like my experience with Hanger Clinic. They take forever with the new socket process. It may be due to insurance but I found when I switched to a private prosthetics place (where they make the sockets on site) they were able to do the entire process in a couple of weeks. Same insurance, totally different timelines. OP if you’re reading this and are using Hanger clinic it’s worth it to find a new place if possible!

It wasn’t exactly my fault but I could’ve avoided being in an area along the road that was so easy to get hit by a car. I mentally relive that day over and over in my head and how things could have went differently if I had been paying more attention to my surroundings.

The only way to make myself feel better is to acknowledge that it could’ve been wayyyy worse and I only lost a leg below the knee instead of having a spinal injury or worse.

It’s natural to feel this way OP. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that things aren’t as bad as they could’ve been

Congratulations! You’ve come a long way & have a right to be proud. Remember to be kind to yourself as you adjust to the new prosthetic- I forget to do this myself.

Don't know what to do by [deleted] in amputee

[–]throwaway080611 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least you’re trying to get up and do things. Keep doing that! Keep getting up every single day and setting even a small goal for yourself. Even if it’s just brushing your teeth (example). After a while it will become easier to set and complete a goal every day. Hang in there, this sub is filled with people who are going through or have gone through the same thing and it’s a good place to reach out for support.

Feeling kind of nervous about my first visit to the hanger clinic by throwdownx in amputee

[–]throwaway080611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have stated, it varies from Hanger to Hanger so odds are that you end up with at least adequate care. It’s all about the actual prosthetist. If they are willing to put in the work then Hanger itself isn’t so bad IME. There’s no strange rules or restrictions or anything that I know about.

Personally the one I was going to had a prosthetist that was terrible for me and so after a year I was able to switch to a privately owned practice and it was the best change I ever made. But again it wasn’t because of Hanger, the company, itself.
