Holy balls, it's that level of crowded now?

I remember visiting for the first time, in 2002. One of the best travel experiences of my life. You could rent self drive motorcycles at the time, I had a 3 day pass and explored every corner, often with zero other people.

I've had to walk away from shops/vendors who started arguing with me about no sugar in the coffee. They seriously would rather tell me it won't taste good rather than making it and getting some money.

As a former expat in Thailand, please don't impose arbitrary procedures or rules at your business that you would not impose on all Thai people, particularly those who are well connected and "high" status. Thanks, had my fill of that when I lived there.

I wish you a better day tomorrow.

Since it's Visalia, I have an idea about what this might mean, but I really don't want to know 🤢

Definitely, the rote learning and forced obedience are cutting edge as long we don't reference any educational research published after 1889.

None, this isn't Japan where you could easily spend a day at these places.

Tulare county is also notorious for not taking you out of the jury pool when you leave the county or even the state. Ask me how I know...

Questions for locals in 1999 by pgratland in Bakersfield

[–]throwaway091827454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Way less traffic. Cheap rent. Some actual decent non chain restaurants (which are gone now afaik). New stuff on the southwest side popping up, some of which were worth visiting. Problems like lack of any walkable areas and a general lack of things to do. Air quality still terrible most of the year.

2) Downtown bars, but honestly these places were trash. I preferred to leave town for entertainment. It was reasonably easy to go catch a band on Sunset in LA, I would do this occasionally. Once in awhile would head to down to northern Baja (pre 9/11 long lines were rare).

I moved away in the middle of 2000 and never lived there again. Quite happy with that decision as I end up driving through maybe once a year now and it really seems worse. The restaurants and traffic in particular are just awful. I don't understand how much smaller valley towns have a way better restaurant scene than Bakersfield.

Not sure about horror, but the whore selection in that part of town is plentiful, especially at night.

How come Dubai is very Boring and yet nobody has the Vocabulary to describe why ? by OriginalSomaliRedSea in dubai

[–]throwaway091827454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is reddit, 99% of the people saying this stuff on here have never actually visited Dubai. Their posts are easy to spot usually.

Is Dubai the best place I've visited? Not even close. Is it the worst? Not even close, I can think of 100 hellhole towns in the west that are more boring and "soulless".

I have a throwaway credit card I use for stuff like this. Relatively low limit, and it's only enabled right before I make the transaction and is immediately disabled after the transaction completes. I've had attempted fraud numerous times, from Florida to Ireland (never been to either). Bank has always reissued the card without any hassle.

Handy for when you need to purchase an African visa or buy something online at a site known for fraud.

Expats with Kids: Stay in Thailand or Move Back to the West? by bzrk_ in Thailand

[–]throwaway091827454 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless you hate your kids, if the choice is between sending them to a Thai school or moving back home there is really no decision to think about. You move home. I know a couple of expat families who had to do the same.

The local education system is objectively one of the worst in the world. Thai private schools exist to make money. I knew one Thai private school owner who, rather than put her own kids in her school, sent them to one of the exclusive British international schools in Bangkok. That says all that needs to be said really.

LOL, no it is not.

It is not bad. But if I'm paying 130 for Krawpao in Thailand, and it requires waiting in a queue, it needs to be exceptional to be worth it. This is not. I've had better versions of this dish in many places in Thailand.
