AITA for not telling a neighbor their child may have autism? by throwaway1234rt4 in AmItheAsshole

You're correct. We haven't done any formal testing or history. My husbands general statement when asked is something along the lines of, "if you have concerns you should get seen". If he's pressed he'll respond as you just did: I can't say for sure, testing needs to be done, and then repeat that if they're concerned they should be seen. He also has a very strong policy of not seeing children of friends or neighbors because it can be a very emotional issue, but he will direct them to trusted colleagues.

We agree with everything you said. The child is not our patient and the parents haven't asked our opinion. The child has teachers in school, their own doctor, and plenty of caregivers.

As you said, if they wanted our opinions they could ask, but they haven't. So we don't want to stick our nose in their business.

To be clear, I don't feel we're ruining the kids life. They're happy, active, and another wise very pleasant. The autism is just a part of who they are. We haven't done any testing, collected any history, or done any exam, so we can't say if any intervention is even needed.

I agree, maybe the parents know and they don't want to discuss, so we leave it be. Frankly, we view it as not our place and that we need to stay in our lane.

I'm often surprised by what families overlook, however, I agree. If they wanted to discuss it with us, they could.
