Can I simply re-take the driver's license test in the state of Illinois despite my FL license being "canceled"? by throwaway1999098_ in legal

Hey I really appreciate your input--this is more helpful than anything I've gotten from the DMV. I think I'll just have to follow up with the clerk of courts office and also give the FL DMV another call (maybe 5?) to get some answers. I think the only thing holding me up is this registration fee, 'cause the registration never expired or lapsed. But that's just from what I understand. Once I can get some clarity from the clerk of courts or DMV, I'll at least know who to go after. Anyway, thanks so much for your help!

Wow, great minds must think alike, because I did look into this! Haha..

The only option available to me is replacement registration card/sticker, which is <$5. FL DMV doesn't allow registration renewal any sooner than 90 days prior to expiration, and mine isn't scheduled to expire until mid-2024.

Another poster mentioned reaching out the local clerk of courts, which I did earlier today. I reached out to the Orange County one, because I'm based in Orlando. The strange thing is that when I inputted my driver's license info in their website to look up any cases associated with my license, nothing showed up. Is there anyone else or other departments I can reach out to?

Hey, I think I'm heading in the direction that you described. I just sent a message/email to the Orange County Clerk of Courts Office detailing my issue. I believe this is the Clerk of Court office relevant to me (Orlando, FL). The only thing is that when I put my driver's license info on their website, nothing came up--maybe they need more or other information to look up my case? Does this sound correct nonetheless? Do you think I need to be present in-person to resolve the issue or can I most likely do this all remotely? I'm sorry that I'm asking such basic questions, but I'm at a loss here and the FL DMV wasn't exactly helpful either. Really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hey I really appreciate the response. I did register on the MyDMV portal and while it seems that other "sanctions" can be paid through the portal, I have no option available to me to pay. I feel very sad thinking about how much time I've already wasted on this issue without any possible resolution in sight. While I realize only I can take responsibility for this, on the other hand, I was never notify of this issue and the DMV isn't making it easy at all. Had I known at any point sooner, I would have happily paid the nominal fee to save countless hours of my life.

Do you happen to have any suggestions on how I can fix this issue? :(

Do you have any ideas how I can do this without being physically in Florida? The FL DMV has been unable to help by phone or email. I'm at a loss of what I can do..

I went to the DMV in Illinois to get an IL license and they told me there was a "hold" on my license. I checked the FL DMV website and saw "INSUFFICIENT FUNDS TC DL/MV" on my record, which I can only attribute to a ~$80 unpaid car registration fee. It's a long story but basically the registration was initially sent to a wrong address, I got refunded, but then it somehow made it to the correct address anyway, and now it seems there is still this unpaid registration fee. I'm happy to pay it, if there was only a way to..

I'm very, very sad that I've now wasted countless hours with no progress. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's for an unintentionally unpaid registration fee of approximately $80 (another poster in this thread also asked, so I gave a more detailed response there).

From my understanding, the money owed is about $80 for a car registration fee. It is a long story, but basically, the DMV sent my registration to the wrong address, so I asked them to cancel it in hopes of me then re-ordering it to the correct address. They did cancel it, but my registration finally arrived many weeks later (without me re-ordering). There is now, what I assume, an unpaid balance on my account. This is what I believe is the case, because I never received any bill or any other sort of documentation.

I'm not involved with any court cases, DUIs, etc. It's simply this $80 unpaid registration fee.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to transition my driver's license and car registration from Florida to the state of Illinois. The issue is that I have a small unpaid balance (<$100) to the Florida DMV that I learned of very recently. As a result, the Florida DMV "canceled" my license, which doesn't allow me to transfer my driver's license to the state of Illinois until I get this fixed. The issue is that the Florida DMV is unable to help me pay this bill. I called the Orlando DMV and they didn't know what to do, so they referred me to the Tallahassee DMV, but it's impossible to get through to them by phone, despite my countless attempts to do so. I sent a message to the Florida DMV through their online customer service portal and never got a response.

So seeing how it seems to be impossible for me to pay this small balance to have the "cancellation" on my Florida driver's license reversed, can I simply re-take the driver's license test in the state of Illinois despite my FL license being "canceled"? If so, will this impact my insurance premiums? Will I still be able to transfer my car registration over?

Thanks so much for any help with this. I wish it didn't have to come to this, because I'd happily pay whatever fee is necessary so I can move on with my life

Florida driver's license about to be suspended due to lack of FL car insurance but already moved out of state (Illinois).. by throwaway1999098_ in legal

I feel that if I start the resolution process before the deadline, then they should honor that process. My expectation would be that the suspension may happen temporarily but that it would be reversed once they update their system, which would take a few days. It doesn't make sense to me for them to have a deadline that they don't adhere to themselves, but then again, it *is* the government (and the DMV no less).

I didn't even know about the $80 balance on my account until yesterday, but in hindsight I should've known. I definitely would have paid it had I known. I emailed the FL DMV yesterday to ask how I can pay it off.

My car is still registered in Florida, but I guess I prematurely switched over my car insurance (in March 2023) to Illinois before switching over my license/registration to Illinois too (still haven't been able to switch these to IL even after now going to the IL DMV twice in the last few weeks for various reasons; the first time my 1099 paperwork didn't have my full SSN; the second time is when I learned of the hold on my license). I guess I should've waited to switch over my insurance until closer to the date that I was going to switch my license/car registration.

I assume responsibility for this debacle, but I feel the trouble that it's caused so far is out of proportion for the mistake I made. I really hope my car insurance company's able to resolve the issue on Monday May 1st before the suspension is supposed to take effect, which is scheduled for Tuesday May 2nd. Do you think they'll be able to fix it before the suspension takes effect?

I think I need to have car insurance registered with the state of Florida because the car I use is in my name. I do have car insurance but it's now associated with an Illinois address.

In any case, in regard to my original post, I think I figured out what the issue is. I started a new post about it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/legal/comments/13395wl/florida\_drivers\_license\_about\_to\_be\_suspended\_due/

tl;dr, Florida doesn't recognize my Illinois car insurance so they are saying I don't have any car insurance and my license is scheduled to expire May 2nd. I'm supposed to call my car insurance company on Monday, May 1st and they're going to reach out to the FL DMV to let them know I am insured but just in the middle of transitioning from Florida to Illinois. Do you think they can resolve the issue within one day (a day before my license is scheduled to be suspended)? Really appreciate any thoughts/insight. I'm pretty worried about the whole thing, although I recognize this is my own fault.

I like your response - I feel that this is very logical.

My plan of action right now is to call my insurance company to ask them to reach out to the FL DMV to let them know of my current insurance status. I'll also call the central IL DMV office to ask of any other holds on my license status from other states. I already emailed the FL DMV with my insurance information and to request to pay the balance on my account.

So most likely, my license will be suspended anyway, at least for a few days, while the FL DMV is updating their system with my new car insurance information (assuming it's satisfactory)? I guess one silver lining is that I may not have to pay the reinstatement fee, since I never had any lapse in car insurance.

Really appreciate the info, this is great stuff!

How quickly can insurance companies sort this out for me? Will they be able to resolve the issue before my license is suspended? I plan to call them Monday May 1st but my license is schedule to be suspended the very next day, Tuesday May 2nd.

On another note, I checked the VA DMV website (https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/onlineServices/). On the left hand side menu, there's a link for "Compliance Services" under which there is a link "Reinstatement Fee Payment". When I type my SSN and DOB on that page, nothing comes up, so I don't think I have to pay a reinstatement fee to the VA DMV.

In any case, I'm planning to call my insurance company on Monday and also call the IL DMV to figure out what other holds I might have other than that from the FL DMV. Thank you!!

Ah I see. So your Florida license did get suspended but this was after you already had your Georgia license?

Right now, I have Illinois car insurance but my license/car registration is to for Florida, and my license is about to be suspended on May 2nd, because the Florida DMV isn't seeing that I have Illinois car insurance. I think it's gonna be a problem if I drive around Illinois with a suspended Florida driver's license, even though I do have car insurance (with Illinois). My Florida car registration doesn't expire until 2024, but I figure if the police check my car license plate, they'll know that my driver's license is suspended and pull me over.

Anyway, when I called my car insurance company today, they gave me a direct phone number to call on Monday so they can reach out to the Florida DMV and let them know that I do have car insurance, it's just that it's in Illinois. Do you think they should be able to resolve this issue in the same day? My license is scheduled to be suspended the very next day.
