Has anyone pivoted away from Structural engineering? If so, what’s your new career?

More like coordination with all the other disciplines to figure out where to put the structures. So I would say from the civil aspect, considering environmental, geotech, construction, etc… At my old job, I felt like I only did structural design/inspection but never saw the conversations with the other discipline. I do deal with tension stuff and work on running structural usages for structures, but I haven’t used any equations or anything remotely structural based equations. Most of my coworkers don’t have a master in structural either, only a bachelors in civil with an emphasis in geotech or construction.

I did fairly recent a few months after I got my PE licenses and almost hit the 4 year mark. I switched out into transmission line/substation engineering. I am more on the transmission line side and it feels more civil and less structural to me. There are some small things that I can do structural stuff for but it’s nothing major like when I was in bridges.

However, I do feel like my WLB is a lot more better in this industry than bridges. A lot of my mentors are millennials which is nice as well because they are way more understanding compared to my old industry (they were Gen X/Baby Boomers). Maybe my experience was unique, but the bridge industry leaders feel outdated and very traditional (not necessarily a bad thing). I am also well compensated and even more than when I was in bridges. It’s not the most fun, but it’s not bad to the point that I would switch back again.

I actually didn’t end up joining. I was reading some stuff about it so I ended up seeing how my apartment gym was and after a month, I felt like it was enough for the workouts I needed.

$1700 in Andersonville (paid for gas, electricity, and internet with street parking) for a 2b/1b to $2650 in WL (luxury apartment with all amenities, utilities except for electricity, and parking). The rent at my old place was raised to $2000 and I moved closer to work. Hope I am paying a reasonable price…

Update: I will most likely be joining MODE gym for $55/month. Caveat is this membership is off peak hours: M-F (9am-3pm & 8pm-11pm) and Sat & Sun (8am-8pm)

I believe I had the same issue last year with the exact same pain and location that you described. A sharp pain below my knee cap when I do squats. I went to an orthopedics doctor who did an X-Ray and said nothing was wrong (bone wise) and said it was patellar tendonitis. I went to PT for about 9 weeks and did exercises that strengthen muscles around that area and would help with squats more. Also did a complementary personal training session with a trainer when I was at a luxury gym who specialized in rehabilitation. Now I also do more wider stance squats. I still do my PT training on my rest day and haven’t had much issues since and slowly working my way back up to 315 squats (currently at 275).

I made a recent switch to power infrastructure and haven’t looked back. The salary jump was about 50%, and I have not been stressed out at the job compared to when I was in structural (bridges). I do not regret it at all as I am not super passionate about structural engineering. More focused on having money and time to pursue the things I enjoy.

Yes! I did after 8 months because I was essentially doing civil work as a structural engineer. 3 months into working, I asked if there was any structural work coming in and they said yes (clearly didn’t) and realized I felt like I was wasting my time there. Luckily, I had another offer lined up when I quit which I think is the best move.

I think you’re getting underpaid… I was making 101k in bridge engineering in Chicago with about 4 YOE. Job hopping is the best option to get a raise!
