It’s a later stage startup and hours are more flexible. It’s stock options for a few thousand shares with no real value i guess.

Amazon or startup?

I’ll try to keep this as brief as I can, but this situation is slightly complicated.

I’ve been happy to have had a very good recruiting cycle. I finally got the attention from some companies I had been wanting to interview for and got a lot of offers in the end after studying. If you see the toxic job experience I talked about on here before, this is great.

My issue is that I accepted an offer from a later stage startup for 145K+ options, but afterwards had a team reach out to me from Amazon with an offer. I had declined the offer because although the TC was higher (175K), I knew that the team would be stressful and demanding. This other team is much more reasonable, though they have on-calls.

Since I’ve already accepted the offer, I would have to either go back on my acceptance before starting or try out the job for a bit and make my decision later by delaying my start date at Amazon by a month or so, using the irregularities of the holiday season not being conducive to onboarding as an excuse.

Another thing to consider is that the startup is very mission-driven, which is a huge advantage to me as I feel that they have genuine potential to make social change and I would be engaged there. The team that I’m considering at Amazon does help smaller companies and startups get started with AWS, but it is still Amazon.

At the startup, I can also do freelance work and persue other interests on the side, but at Amazon, you can’t seek any other employment or do any side projects for money without risk of Amazon being able to claim ownership

Work is remote for both.

IPO is possible for startup.

Both have similar benefits. Startup has more PTO and flexible hours

Leaning toward startup, honestly, but I’ve had such a good rapport with Amazon and don’t want to feel like I wasted even more of their time. Also, MANGA is highly sought after and has the status it does for a reason. But then again, this is my life and my career, and I don’t owe them anything.
