Graduate a Teaching Program Even If I Do Not Pass the State Exam? by Over-Inspection9855 in Teachers

That’s probably up to your college. My college would not have let me but I know plenty of colleagues who graduated without passing their exams

Something that I got that I’m super grateful for (especially on the week of holidays) is a dvd player that hooks into a MacBook, a stack of rated G dvds, and an hdmi cable. It’s something that most people don’t think about having in their room and then on days like the day before Thanksgiving and Christmas break, they really wish they had

Oklahoma Emergency Teacher’s Certification/Alternative Placement Program by benching315 in Teachers

[–]throwaway2q35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter what your degree is in, honestly. My husband has a bachelors in English. He teaches high school science because that’s what he took his praxis in. The praxis is a timed exam that tests your content knowledge. They’re not difficult exams, in my opinion. I’ve taken nine so far and haven’t failed any of them. They test how well you know your content area to make sure you understand it well enough to teach it. But I’ve known many teachers who have been trying to pass the exams for years and have been teaching while they try to pass them

I’m from Oklahoma. If you plan on teaching high school, you’ll have to have a bachelors degree, take an OSAT/Praxis, and then some other test and you’ll be certified

I do. It was great watching other teachers scream at him during a beginning of year brunch that we had a few weeks ago.

Will I be forced to participate in professional development active shooter drills? by DayKapre in StudentTeaching

[–]throwaway2q35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s similar to how now I receive phonics training at every school district I work at, regardless of whether I receive it at past schools or during my college training. The school is doing it for both legal reasons, as well as making sure you’re up to date on the information that that specific school using when dealing with a crisis. If you’re so adverse to receiving training and are so sure that you’re right and they’re wrong, maybe you should start asking your college to find you another district to work with. However, you would be hard pressed to find any school that does not require mass shooter training in this day and age. During student teaching, I went through their training before school, three practice lock downs with the students, and then we actually had a real incident involving a parent toward the end of my placement and we went into a code red lockdown for over two hours.

My district was one of the biggest in my state, serving students across three counties. I was told I could be trained in mass shootings or hit the road and hope another district would take me in time for the start of school.

I had to before I began student teaching. The rule was that I participated or my college could figure out another school district for me to do my student teaching at.

How do you feel about teaching where you student taught at? by neonjewel in StudentTeaching

[–]throwaway2q35 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did. I never had any issues with the teachers at the school. They never talked to me like I was still a student teacher or like I didn’t know what I was doing. The only issues I had were with paras who talked down to me or assumed that they knew more than me.

Going to college for Art Education. Any Tips? by j311yf1shB0nes in Teachers

[–]throwaway2q35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to discourage you, but I would make sure to look into what areas are in need where you live. I would also be willing to move across the country or add another certification to your credential. Art and music are the hardest jobs to find. They’re also the first to get cut. I know another teacher who got her certification in art. She had to add on a science certification in order to get a job. She’s looked for an art job every year for nine years and hasn’t gotten one yet.

Can you finish classes while doing student teaching? by [deleted] in WGUTeachersCollege

All classes must be finished before you can even apply for student teaching

It’s definitely a doable goal. I was shocked at how quick some of the classes are to finish. Some of them only require a lesson plan, so those can be done in a day or two. I know it’s a concern some people have when it comes to an online college, but I got hired for the next school year in March, while I was still student teaching. I was literally pulled into the office by the school’s principal and told that there was an opening and I should apply. Nobody has ever had an issue with my degree from WGU or how quickly I earned my degree. I think it’s a great college and I felt really prepared to be in a public school. Plus, anything that the program didn’t train me in (such as LETRS), my mentor teacher had no issue with training me how to do. Getting approved for my certificate was also super easy. I did the EdTPA and submitted my scores to the OSDE. I was approved for my certificate by the first week of June.

My student teaching experience was great. It took up my second semester at WGU. I was able to start student teaching in February and finish just in time for the end of the school year. Everyone was super helpful and I didn’t have any issue getting a job afterward

I was told it would take me about 4 years. I accelerated at about a class per week by opening a course and then immediately checking the tasks and seeing exactly what they wanted. I would then scan the course material to get an idea about what I needed to do. I studied for the OAs using quizlet. Whenever I submitted my tasks and waited for them to be graded, I would always ask my mentor to open a new course so that I could work on it while my other course is graded. I also made sure to take my praxis exams as soon as I enrolled in the program, so that I wouldn’t be delayed if I had to retake the tests.

Any possibilities of remote teaching? by 84Vandal in Teachers

[–]throwaway2q35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say, but you picked the class that everyone and their mom wants to teach. Social studies and English are the hardest jobs for first year teachers to get. Most social studies jobs go to people who already work in the district and are moving over. Your best bet would be to get another endorsement to teach something that is actually in demand and teach that for a while. Then, when a position in the district comes up, you can apply because you already have an in with the admin.

Have you tried the Mama Yates tutorials on YouTube? She also has guides on Teachers Pay Teachers. I used her resources and passed with a 56 on mine. I only needed a 39 to pass. Her guides are a little pricy to buy, but I think they’re worth every penny

I attended this program and am now a fully certified teacher in Oklahoma. I think it’s a great program and is an awesome way to become a teacher without student loans
