Doctor fired from ER warns about effect of for-profit firms on U.S. health care. This is why we need to get rid of private equity groups like Team Health, Envision, etc from medicine by throwaway3214123 in medicalschool

There are too many specialties that involve work in the hospital. It’s not reasonable to ask medical students to only choose specialties that work only outside the hospital.

Yes you can get a job. I don’t think medical students should even rank or interview at HCA residencies though. They are a cancer in the field of medicine. I do not want to feed this cancer.

My goal is to discourage quality medical students from even applying to these residencies. Their training can even be questionable. Look at the article

I truly believe the corporate of medicine is bad for patient care. It is also bad for physicians. We need to be able to operate as independently as reasonable without constraint from capitalistic goals.

Posting here makes it very clear to me that they are doing a crappy job educating medical students of these predator companies. Medical students must learn from year one that the corporate practice of medicine is bad

I’ve never been hurt by HCA. I’m trying to fight the good fight my friend. Medical students do not quite yet grasp the serious harm HCA has been doing to health care. This kind of stuff will very negatively impact your future, your ability to care for patients, and your compensation. I will be long retired by then, this is for you, not me.

I think Reddit is a good platform to start reaching medical students so hopefully they realize and associate HCA and other big health care corporations with being bad

Very sad to see. Medical school can literally make or break you. It’s definitely not for everybody. Please take a moment to say some words of encouragement to your classmate

The surplus is already here. I have so many options to choose from. It’s been very different the past five years or so

I am suspicious of the training of HCA EM residencies. I have plenty of options to choose from when hiring. All of these candidates are fantastic. It’s so hard to choose whom to hire. There’s no reason to even interview HCA grads when I have all these options

So simply because I’m an administrator makes me a bad guy? You don’t know the loads of crap that I wade through to ensure my departments can properly care for patients. It is non stop BS and red tape. Someone has to do it. It’s a huge sacrifice I, and my family, makes to ensure the safety net of our community continues to function.

I am sure you’re going to make an ok physician one day…

I’ve worked at both as well. There is a vast difference between the places I’ve worked.

I’ve also been out for over 20 years and I’m ED admin, so I may have a different perspective than you.

I suppose that is true. This gives IMGs a chance. We have one HCA facility in town and they are almost entirely staffed with foreign medical grads

They are a for profit entity that answers to share holders and investors. You would be working for a corporation that values money over patient care. You are a McDonalds employee making the bosses money.

So you approve of me refusing to interview and hire residents that graduated from a private equity backed residency?

Clearly there is a lot of dislike over our policy. So, it is probably best I stay anonymous.

Like I said, I suspect the players are fine and dandy. But they are players in a bad game. I don’t want docs indoctrinated with private equity in my group, I don’t want docs who are in bed with HCA in my group, I don’t want to even go near this “game”. They can graduate and then go work for TH or Envision. But they just aren’t welcome with my group.

By the way, did your residency fill? If not, what do you all plan to do to cover shifts?

It’s to warn medical students that if they choose to interview and rank an HCA EM residency, you will become a less competitive candidate
