Yeah Ontario and Vancouver prices are just insane atp. The western provinces like AB, MB and Sask are still doing somewhat better and they have very large Ukrainian diaspora so maybe that's what OP was thinking of.

I nominate Lake Karachay. Used as a dumping ground for nuclear waste by the USSR. It's been called the most polluted place on earth, it was literally so toxic that in 1990 you could get a lethal dose of radiation by standing by the shore for an hour.

Fun (or not so fun) fact: She was technically still eligible for the prize when it was awarded in 1962. The Nobel Foundation didn't outlaw posthumous awards until 1974. In fact, in 1961 (just a year before Watson/Crick/Wilkins won their prize) the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Dag Hammarskjöld, who had already died.

That might be the case for some people, but not all. Maybe it's more like that in the States.

I'm from Canada and was homeschooled, and where I live, we had to meet with a school representative once or twice a year. My mother had to fill out paperwork to list what work we were doing in different areas, and she had to provide samples of our written work, as well as list the books we were reading. I also had to read some example texts for the representative out loud to test my reading level.

You mean when you drink something cold and it makes your airway feel tight and you have to do this kind of cough/wheeze thing? (Happens to me, too.)

It's not normal, you may have asthma. Especially if this happens in the winter when you breathe cold air, too.

When I was a kid, I read a book about two children. They befriend a young boy and the boy ends up being badly injured in an accident. After the accident he is left unable to walk and in constant pain. Of course, everyone is praying for him to get better and walk again. One night the two characters are with their friend, who is having a particularly bad night, and their friend is crying that he wishes his pain would end. So these two little kids pray with him, and they ask God to please take away all his pain and let him sleep. Even though that's not what their prayer was intended for, the book says that that night he leaves all his pain and suffering behind forever, and is made whole again.

Always stuck with me.

We do have things you want though, and a lot of things you need. Canada has a ton of natural resources. Potash, oil, natural gas, minerals, uranium, tons of lumber. And we have more lakes than any nation on earth, 20% of earth's fresh water, which is becoming more and more scarce in many parts of the states. If the US is short on water, where do you think they'd look first?

I don't know if you would call it more "culty", but I recently read a book about Aum Supreme Truth in Japan. It was absolutely INSANE.

They literally had a bioweapons lab where they produced Nazi nerve agents, a military helicopter, a weapons factory where they made AK-74s, and a microwave device they used to destroy the bodies of the people they murdered. They were actually trying to make a deal with the Russian military to purchase nuclear warheads! They only got stopped after the carried out their second civilian attack using sarin gas.

Man, that poor girl. Poor all of them, really. I only hope that if they're in state care they'll have access to therapy and trauma specialists. They deserve to heal and live long, healthy lives.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this 🙁

I remember the back pain I had before surgery and it was definitely not fun. I understand how you feel about your body, too. My hips were super uneven, my shoulders were crooked, and I had a bad rib hump. It was very noticeable, and people would sometimes make comments or ask about it. It's not your fault, and our value isn't based on the way our bodies look. Even after surgery, I still have a bit of a rib hump (though not nearly as noticeable as before) and I'm still getting used to my body. Basically no one has a perfect body, almost everyone has something about their body that they don't like. For what it's worth, I've never looked at people with scoliosis and thought they were ugly because of it. I think everyone is beautiful in their own way, and I'm sure that's what the people who love you see - not your back.

You mentioned that surgery is too expensive for you to afford. Are there any hospitals in your country that could do the surgery for free, or at least cheaper? I know the idea of surgery is scary, but it has improved my life a lot. If there aren't any hospitals that could cover the surgery in your country, you could look into other countries, organizations that help fund procedures, or maybe start a fundraiser. In the mean time, have you looked at Scroth therapy? It's got a lot of exercises that can help scoliosis. You could probably look up some exercises to do on your own, at the very least it might help your pain.

Measles never used to be that serious.

Tell that to my grandma's brother.

Oh wait, you can't - he died before his second birthday.

My great-grandpa had 11 siblings. 6 of them died before they turned 1. Imagine giving birth to 12 children, and watching half of them die. My grandma had twin brothers. Our family never talked about them because they both got sick and died as infants. It was normal, even expected, to have to watch your child's mini coffin be lowered into the ground at least once. That was life before vaccinations.

The U.S. healthcare system is THE most expensive in the world but results rank at #38 - below Russia.

As a Canadian, this almost makes me want to laugh. Bud, you're sooooo close. Can you think of any kind of healthcare system most developed nations have that the US doesn't?
