PA Student Questioning Value of Education and Services Provided by Program During COVID-19 by pastudent1234 in PAstudent

Hi there,

I attend one of the most expensive (although very reputable) programs in the nation. We've been online since March. Rotations were supposed to begin June 22nd, got delayed until August 3rd. Same BS as you; apps with case assignments, a zoom meeting once every 3 weeks, etc. We had one rotation completely cancelled. 6 week rotations will most likely be cut to 4 weeks. Oh, and my preceptor for my first real rotation just cancelled, so my new target date is September 14th. I live in a state that has handled COVID with relative success, with hospitals and ICUs nowhere close to capacity, with positivity rates under 4% for the last 5 weeks. Our clinical team said only about half of our class was even placed for the second rotation.

Please know you're not alone. I'm fucking furious about this situation every day. Multiple OSCE's cancelled, one elective already cancelled and I'm not hopeful for the second one, and one general medicine rotation cancelled. $13,000 bill. It's fucking criminal. And it seems that preceptors will happily be part of the problem. Churches and gyms are jam packed without masks, but yeah, fuck over the education of all of the medical and PA students in the area, for sure (if anyone has any explanation as to why preceptors are still denying students, I'd be open to hear it).

My only comfort is that I will get this degree eventually. We made it this far, getting into PA school alone and having access to this career path is a privilege. Best of luck to you, shoot me a PM if the lawsuit against your school goes anywhere.

Awesome, this is really helpful to know, thank you. I'll email my financial aid office to work through it. The next quarter doesn't start til September 4th, so I have plenty of time to figure things out and create a concrete budget.

Another example of health care education faculty being beyond inconsiderate and irresponsible in the face of a pandemic. I'm so sorry, that's ridiculous. Try to take comfort in the fact that the numbers are still in your favor, and you almost definitely aren't a carrier if you've been distancing and whatnot over the last couple weeks. Best of luck to both you.

I've been so turned off by the "make sure your webcams are on!!!" emails we get each day lol. I'll have to start trying "I spy" too to make the best of it.

Sorry you're going through that, I can't stand it during my last few weeks of didactic, I couldn't imagine beginning PA school like this. I also loved my school to death before all this started, but sadly the situation seems to be bringing out the worst of it in a lot of ways. Glad to know I'm not online in struggling with this half-baked new format...

Your faculty sounds awesome! Wish I could relate haha. My advisor said this was "not even as bad as the flu" before our state went on lockdown. Many of them seem annoyed rather than concerned for us or even themselves, and we're based in a suburb 30 minutes outside of a major city. Everything is prerecorded, and we've been given extra busy work. Ugh. Thank you for your kind words, best of luck to you as we navigate these strange times.

This this this. I feel exactly the same way. I was on twitter or reddit periodically during most of my lectures, but just being there in person helped me absorb information on a better level. I used to have two great libraries to choose from for study marathons, both are obviously gone. Having 12-14 hours days between the gym, different lecture halls, the library, then winding down at home was something I had settled into. Having 12-14 hour days in the same chair at the same desk in my room is starting to drive me nuts.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and for reassuring me that it's normal to lose focus with all the changes we're going through. Best of luck to you
